🔴NEW: A group leading the push to overturn Scotland’s opposition to new nuclear power says it is “independent” and “grassroots”. But we found links between campaign and a lobbying firm representing EDF, which owns Torness nuclear station

Scotland's @JohnSwinney supports @nuclearban & noted "it is essential that all nations abide by the international rules-based system. The events of the last few days do not suggest to me that the United States and Israel have done this" US-nuke-addicted PM is never that clear.
Security Council, Saturday @antonioguterres laid out why US and Israeli strikes on Iran were illegal. Without acknowledging this, country after country only condemned Iran. Shame on European leaders lacking @sanchezcastejon courage to defend essential international law.
A bomb-any-regime-we-choose approach exemplifies why the world needs nuclear weapons to be banned. Non nuclear states advance the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. The US ignores Non-Proliferation Treaty disarmament obligations & nuclear Israel never accepted any.
Threatening nuclear death to every living thing as so-called defence, security or safety gets no less suicidal, genocidal and ecocidal, whether or not Britain could actually do this without the USA. #TPNW
1/5: The new line from "deterrence" enthusiasts (most of whom will have vociferously supported the Trident programme until yesterday) is:
We need a 'truly' independent nuclear weapons programme.
But bear in mind that...🧵
@ScottishCND But of course maintaining the threat of nuclear death for every living thing as so-called defence, security or safety would be no less insane, if Britain could do this without the USA.

In a joint opinion from international law experts, they warn that Britain is breaching the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) with the purchase of nuclear-capable fighter jets and US nuclear bombs in Britain.

I am gravely alarmed by the use of force by the United States against Iran today. This is a dangerous escalation in a region already on the edge – and a direct threat to international peace and security.
There is a growing risk that this conflict could rapidly get out of control – with catastrophic consequences for civilians, the region, and the world.
I call on Member States to de-escalate and to uphold their obligations under the @UN Charter and other rules of international law.
At this perilous hour, it is critical to avoid a spiral of chaos.
There is no military solution.
The only path forward is diplomacy.
The only hope is peace.
19th June 1956, UK explodes a large nuclear bomb, deliberately exposing a British ship to fallout without then monitoring the health of the crew or Australians downwind. @atomiclabrats@nuclearban One of many harms on the way to catastrophe. Support diplomacy over mass death #TPNW
