*From Criminals Surrounding the Presidency to Criminals Occupying the Presidency: Meet the Mnangagwas, Zimbabwe's New BSAC*

*How does a 22 year old side chick of President Mnangagwa's son own properties worth 10 million US dollars?*

Fellow Zimbabweans, this is a question lingering in the minds of all right thinking citizens. This past week, Collins Mnangagwa's 22 year old mistress, Kelsea Tafirenyika, was re arrested shortly after her release from remand prison. On top of charges relating to dealing in dangerous drugs, Mnangagwa's daughter in law is facing charges of money laundering involving more than 10 million US dollars.

Yes, dear reader, you heard correctly. 10 million US dollars for a 22 year old whose only qualification is being a mistress to one of Mnangagwa's twin sons.

The infighting, accusations, and counter accusations between the Mnangagwas, as epitomised by the First Lady Auxilia Mnangagwa and her estranged daughter in law Kelsea, have opened a can of worms on how the Mnangagwas are looting the country dry.

*The Mnangagwas, Zimbabwe's New BSAC!*

In 1889, a British imperialist, Cecil John Rhodes, secured the Royal Charter, a document that entitled him and his company, the British South Africa Company (BSAC), to have direct control of the land north of the Limpopo on behalf of the British Crown.

The company, which had a Loot Committee, committed what some historians termed a colossal stroke of thievery or a stock exchange swindle. They controlled millions of acres of land, minerals, and mining rights, on top of a large herd of cattle looted from Africans.

Company rule in Southern Rhodesia was marked by capitalistic extraction, looting, forced labour, and exploitation of Africans.

Forty-six years after independence, Zimbabwe is faced with a similar situation in the form of Mnangagwa's so-called Second Republic. After removing Robert Mugabe via a coup in 2017, Mnangagwa's coup plotters told the nation that they were targeting criminals surrounding the Presidency.

Ironically, Mnangagwa, his family, and his inner circle of cartels like Wicknell Chivhayo and Kudakwashe Tagwirei, who are now running the show, have proved to be the real criminals occupying the President's Office.

Named by Al Jazeera's Gold Mafia documentary as the kingpin of gold smuggling and money laundering, Mnangagwa has proved to be the archbishop of corruption and looting in this country.

We are in trouble, fellow Zimbabweans, if we do not act now. We must stop Mnangagwa before he turns our country into a personal property like what Rhodes did with BSAC.

Dear Mayor Mafume,

One area I would strongly encourage the City of Harare to consider is investing in, or outsourcing, specialist expertise in Landscape Architecture and Streetscape Design.

The city could recruit a qualified landscape architect, sponsor a promising student to study the discipline, or commission the private sector to provide the necessary expertise. This is not an obscure field; Landscape Architecture and related disciplines are offered at universities and provide the technical skills required to rethink and professionally manage urban public spaces.

For effective streetscape design and planning, the city would benefit from professionals with training in Landscape Architecture, Urban Design or Urban Planning, preferably supported by professional accreditation. These specialists should be proficient in Computer-Aided Design (CAD), AutoCAD, Vectorworks, SketchUp and other 3D modelling tools, while also possessing practical knowledge of urban planning, ecology, GIS and spatial data analysis, pedestrian movement, traffic integration and community consultation.

Good streetscape design is about much more than planting trees or beautifying pavements. It involves designing the entire public realm; roads, sidewalks, trees, lighting, street furniture, drainage, signage, public transport interfaces, pedestrian spaces and commercial frontages, as one coherent urban environment.

Harare would benefit enormously from treating streetscape design as a specialised professional discipline rather than something that can be improvised. A relatively modest investment in the right skills could have a significant impact on the appearance, functionality, walkability and ultimately the economic attractiveness of the city.

If the requisite expertise is not currently available within council, there is no reason to wait. Recruit it, develop it or outsource it to those who already possess it.

This has happened before. Twice, in fact as far as I know, and each time the same thing brought it to an end.

The first was in 2018, when a young Ajax academy player named Sean Steur walked onto the Johan Cruyff Arena pitch before the club's home game against AZ and started juggling. He reached 2,245 touches before officials had to stop him because the professional match was about to start.

I realise now that I was too hasty and abrupt with @daddyhope. I had not seen the context in which this middle class debate started, only the post that triggered me. That is on me, and I apologise. Given the national interest in this thing called the “middle class”, it is worth interrogating what we actually mean by it.

The middle class is not really an economic invention. It is a social construct born of industrialisation. Economists love it because its growth reflects underlying economic growth. Politicians love it because people with property, pensions and school fees tend to value stability and the status quo. The Church loves its thrift, respectability and conformity. Business loves it because it provides the great mass market for manufactured consumption, including inventions as mundane as the modern idea of breakfast. 😅

Sociologists and anthropologists probably have more to tell us about what makes a middle class than economists.

Zimbabwe is particularly interesting because the bulk of Zimbabweans have remained inherently middle class in their values despite national incomes having barely improved since 1990. With most now in informal employment.The 1990s social code persists: disproportionate spending on education and university degrees, private healthcare and medical welfare often supported by the diaspora, domestic help, homeownership, funeral plans, and buying a residential stand as a substitute pension after formal pensions failed. Even poorer households make extraordinary sacrifices to preserve these things. I made the point that high-density areas in Zimbabwe have robust private schools teaching the Cambridge syllabus, while households earning considerably more in the UK routinely use state schools. Income tells us how much people earn. It does not fully tell us the social class whose values and aspirations they inhabit.

Why do donors throw so much money at “xenophobia” in South Africa?

Because xenophobia is fundable. It fits neatly into the language of human rights, social cohesion, refugee protection and anti-discrimination. It produces workshops, reports, campaigns, consultants, monitoring projects and measurable NGO outputs.

What is far less fundable is the political economy underneath the conflict: landlessness, mass unemployment, collapsing municipalities, undocumented migration, informal-market displacement, wage competition, border failure and the continuing concentration of wealth.

So a material crisis is translated into a behavioural problem. The dispossessed become the object of correction. Their anger is studied, diagnosed and managed, while the economic architecture producing that anger remains largely untouched.

That framing protects the status quo because it relocates the source of the crisis from structures to attitudes. Instead of interrogating ownership, extraction, labour markets, state failure and economic exclusion, the debate becomes about prejudice among the people carrying the heaviest burden of the system.

The existing economic order is thus spared authentic examination, while the dispossessed are recast as the problem requiring intervention.

Follow the money and you often find the framing. Follow the framing and you often find the interests it leaves undisturbed.
