The Government has invited public comments on the Draft Western Ghats Ecologically Sensitive Area (ESA) Notification dated 27 July 2026. The consultation is currently open until 25 September 2026.

When ecologically sensitive areas are reduced, forests are opened for industries, and mining and industrial zones are planned across the Western Ghats , who really benefits?

Development cannot mean sacrificing forests, rivers, biodiversity and the livelihoods of local communities.

They are a life-support system for millions of people.

THIS is the township approved in 2019 on Survey 44 of Vetal tekdi. A mall, commercial and swanky residential buildings have been planned here on 80 acres of prime land on the Paud side of the tekdi

The green area on the right is the Namo Nirvana park, currently being developed as mitigation for thousands of trees that will be cut for the BB road.

However, this park will only be accessible to the residents of the township via BB road, as the surrounding slopes are too steep for walking up.

For generations, local communities have protected these precious forests and wetlands as sacred groves. Yet if these areas are excluded from the ESA, they could lose an important layer of protection.

The Western Ghats ESA draft prohibits mining, new thermal power projects and new/expanded Red-category industries within the ESA.

Protect every remaining swamp. Protect the Western Ghats.

For years, parents have fought for something so basic; children should be able to play, run & compete without having to breathe toxic winter air. Last year, while children were being asked to participate in outdoor sports, Delhi also held marathons when AQI was near 400, even as athletes and sporting events began pulling out or being moved because of pollution.

The Delhi High Court’s intervention last year, on a petition by 11 kids and subsequently the Supreme Court’s attention to the issue, gave legal recognition to what parents and children had been saying for years; children’s right to sport cannot come at the cost of their right to breathe clean air.

@CAQM_Official has now ahead of the winter advised schools across Delhi-NCR & neighbouring states to avoid physical sports in Nov–Dec. This must become a precedent across India also for all sport events.
