82 years on from the Normandy landings, we reflect on the thousands of British, Commonwealth and Allied forces who lost their lives for the liberation of Western Europe.
We will remember them.
Today marks the anniversary of D-Day - a moment that changed the course of history.
We remember the courage, sacrifice, and service of all those who took part in the D-Day landings.
Their bravery changed history. Their legacy lives on.
Lest we forget.🌺

This day in 1944, Sgt Norman Jackson crawled onto the wing of his burning Lancaster bomber at 20,000 ft, attempting to extinguish a fire and save his crew.
He fell (with damaged parachute) after a German night fighter attacked. Survived, captured, and earned the Victoria Cross in 1945. #WW2
🌺🕯️ Tony Johnson, one of Britain’s oldest surviving Normandy veterans, has passed away at the age of 106. From the battlefields of El Alamein and D-Day to helping rebuild post-war Britain, his story is one of courage, resilience, and quiet dedication.
Beyond his military service, he lived a full and independent life — a devoted family man, a respected Freemason of 71 years, and someone who embraced both tradition and modern life right into his final days.
Stories like his remind us not only of the sacrifices made, but of the character and strength that shaped the world we live in today.
Rest in peace, Tony Johnson. Thank you for your service. 🇬🇧🌺

🌺 ✈️ In May 1943, Gibson led Operation Chastise — a daring and highly dangerous mission to destroy key dams in Nazi Germany using revolutionary “bouncing bombs.” Flying at incredibly low levels under heavy fire, the crews faced almost impossible odds.
The raid was a remarkable feat of skill, precision, and courage. While it dealt a significant blow to German industry, it also came at a heavy cost, with many young airmen losing their lives.
Guy Gibson was later awarded the Victoria Cross for his leadership, but he always shared that honour with the men who flew beside him.
Their courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten. 🌺\

⚓️🌺 A true hero has crossed the bar.
Dougie Shelley, a D-Day veteran and Arctic Convoy sailor, has passed away at the remarkable age of 100. Serving his country from just 17 years old, he played a vital role aboard HMS Milne during the Normandy landings, helping protect Allied troops on one of history’s most significant days.
Last year, Dougie captured hearts around the world when he received more than 16,000 birthday cards to celebrate his 100th — a testament to the gratitude and admiration people felt for his service and life.
Awarded France’s Légion d'Honneur and honoured by messages from the King and Downing Street, Dougie’s legacy is one of courage, dedication, and quiet heroism.
