@medievalsarah@kellen_wilkin Yes this was a great book and it also opened my eyes to how this might be realated to reality but also could be mythological from a christian standpoint. I didn't think this kind of book would make me feel like I wanted these kinds of things to exist. #divc0m#ch1206#ch1002
Now i see where this becomes and epic, Dante travelling through purgatory witnessing the 7 sins and the punishments, getting a p erased from his forehead each time he meets an angel at the end of each place #divc0m#ch1206#ch1002
It honestly would terrify me if all people were interested in was religion. All we do in college is learn and to be closed minded makes me not believe people were very civilized in their religion, god was likely an excuse to do bad things #ch1206#ch1002#divc0m
It seems that most of history resides on the writings of that century and that it is similar to the writing before it. Do you think the writers maybe meet and start using eachothers work to make a new one? It could have been the closest thing to copyright #divc0m#ch1206#ch1002
@andrewch1205 Much of the nature of Christianity and Catholicism really hasn't changed. Hell is vicious and fire and the damned and all that are still entirely the same because hell must also be the same as in the past, otherwise it might be a different religion #ch1002#ch1206#divc0m
@Saharaguillen1@alexmendoza721 Yea it seems apparent that all the dead babies who weren't baptized just had to go to hell, even though they did nothing wrong, was there not enough room in heaven? #ch1002#ch1206#divc0m
@RPch201 @PriessNicolina I agree, most of the adventures from Mandeville didn't seem very credible. It's like he decribed adventurer's stories while Marco Polo's journey was believable and understandable. #mrcopolo#ch1002#ch1206
I wonder if the whole "Marco polo" game is an American tradition, or came from when Marco Polo's adventures were written and have passed on to this day. #mrcopolo#ch1002#ch1206
@wherearemylimbs Really wish our adventures could be of the extent of Marco polo's in this day and age but very few of us get the opportunity #mrcopolo#ch1002#ch1206
@Saharaguillen1@wherearemylimbs It was probably a piece of writing that spread throughout cultures all over. However, it was probably told by people with educational backgrounds since I recall the travels came about in the dark ages. People weren't very literate in those days.
The travels of Mandeville may have been staged or written for enjoyment, since many of the things i have read explain that the travels may have just been reitterations of other travellers at the time, in more detailed sounding travels. #mand3v1ll3#ch1002#ch1206
@B_A_Southworth I agree the travels may have been a misconception. I have read a similar article that told me the travels were in French origonally and likely were rewritten to fit other languages. It was probably perceived differently between cultures. #mand3v1ll3#ch1002#ch1206
It seems very far off that the travels were able to incorporate much detail but were long enough ago to have the texts manipulated or exaggerated, especially if any of the stories may have been lost. #mand3v1ll3#ch1002#ch1206
@roedwilm I agree, also back in those times it must've been much easier to catch an illness or worse, die from that illness. It comes to a surprise to me when much of India is unsanitary to this day and Mandeville did not somehow get some waterborne sickness. #mand3v1ll3#ch1002#ch1206
@GabbyBrito2 That's quite the feat for this kind of text, to be less religiously biased and mention more of how other people culturally do things, with out questioning or opinionating it with your own beliefs. #mand3v1ll3#ch1002#ch1206
