Friends in our attempt to understand what Jesus is saying in his first public sermon, we have run into a word in the English translations of the bible, righteousness, which comes nowhere close to delivering the original meaning in Greek and Hebrew.

Friends as we draw closer to Christmas day, we are learning from Jesus’ first public sermon as he tells us who we are. Because we are blessed, favored, we don’t have to pretend, we can be authentically who we are. Today we begin his fourth blessing.

Today we hear Jesus say, You are favored in God’s eyes, therefore be meek, humble, strong under control of your master, and by submitting to the ways of God, what everyone wants, control, shall become yours.

We can be meek. The source of our strength is rooted in God’s grasp of us. We are favored, and our power is under control. Our strength is humbled, we are an extension of the way of our master.

Today we notice he says we can be meek, which is a real counter to the popular understanding that divine favor makes one strong, and what reveals insecure people is that the desire to have power.

Friends, yesterday we heard again Jesus’ assertion that we are favored, and mourning does not change that. My mind goes to that scene, near the end of his life, just before Jesus rides into Jerusalem, he weeps.

Friends, we are getting closer to Christmas and we have turned our attention to listening, allowing the words of the one who is coming to shape our lives.

He has a way of leading us out of our anxiety, drawing us to become new creations. Jesus begins his first public sermon with an interesting word. In English translation we have received Blessed. The Greek is Favored.
