भारत के विभाजन के लिए मुस्लिम नेताओं ने 16 अगस्त, 1946 को ‘डायरेक्ट एक्शन डे’ का ऐलान किया था, जब मुस्लिम भीड़ ने हिन्दुओं पर जम कर कहर बरपाया। बंगाल में इसका खासा असर देखने को मिला, जहाँ कई इलाकों में दंगे हुए। नोआखली के दंगे उनमें सबसे ज्यादा कुख्यात हैं। वहाँ तो कई महीनों तक दंगा चलता ही रहा था। महात्मा गाँधी को इलाके में कैंप करना पड़ा था। उस दौरान हुए इन्हीं दंगों को लेकर एक वयोवृद्ध व्यक्ति ने अपने अनुभव साझा किए हैं।

पत्रकार अभिजीत मजूमदार ने इसका वीडियो सोशल मीडिया पर साझा किया है। ‘डायरेक्ट एक्शन डे’ में ज़िंदा बच गए रबीन्द्रनाथ दत्ता ने अपनी आँखों के सामने मुस्लिम भीड़ की क्रूरता को देखा था। उनकी उम्र 92 साल है। इस हिसाब से उस समय वो युवावस्था में थे और उनकी उम्र 24 साल के आसपास रही होगी। उन्होंने बताया है कि कैसे राजा बाजार के बीफ की दुकानों पर हिन्दू महिलाओं की नग्न लाशें हुक से लटका कर रखी गई थीं।

उन्होंने बताया कि विक्टोरिया कॉलेज में पढ़ने वाली कई हिन्दू छात्राओं का बलात्कार किया गया, उनकी हत्याएँ हुईं और उनकी लाशों को हॉस्टल की खिड़कियों से लटका दिया गया। रबीन्द्रनाथ दत्ता ने अपनी आँखों से हिन्दुओं की क्षत-विक्षत लाशें देखी हैं। जमीन पर खून की धार थी, जो उनके पाँव के नीचे से भी बह कर जा रही थी। इनमें से कई महिलाएँ भी थीं, जिनकी लाशों से उनके स्तन गायब थे। उनके प्राइवेट पार्ट्स पर काले रंग के निशान थे

ये क्रूरता की चरम सीमा थी। रबीन्द्रनाथ दत्ता ने अपने देखे अनुभवों को दुनिया को बताने के लिए ‘डायरेक्ट एक्शन डे’, नोआखली नरसंहार और 1971 नरसंहार पर दर्जन भर किताबें लिखीं। उनकी पत्नी का निधन होने के बाद उनके गहने बेच कर उन्होंने इसके लिए खर्च जुटाया। उनकी आँखों-देखी के साथ-साथ उनका गहन अध्ययन और रिसर्च भी इसमें शामिल था। उनका कहना है कि बंगाल के किसी नेता, फ़िल्मी हस्ती या फिर मीडिया को इससे कोई मतलब नहीं है।

डायरेक्ट एक्शन डे के दिन शुरू हुए दंगे चार दिनों तक चले और उसमें करीब दस हज़ार लोग मारे गए। महिलाएँ बलात्कार का शिकार हुईं और जबरन लोगों का धर्म परिवर्तन करवाया गया। इन दंगों में हिन्दुओं की ओर से गोपाल चंद्र मुख़र्जी, जिन्हें गोपाल पाठा के नाम से भी जाना जाता है, की भूमिका की कहानी बहुत प्रसिद्ध है। गोपाल मुख़र्जी ने एक वाहिनी का गठन किया था जिसने इन दंगों के दौरान हिन्दुओं की रक्षा की और वाहिनी इस तरह से लड़ी कि ‘मुस्लिम लीग’ के नेताओं को गोपाल मुख़र्जी से खून-खराबा रोकने के लिए अनुरोध करना पड़ा।
