when i came into the '08 voices merging battle, too cocky after winning the previous year, and got slapped down in the first round—that was michael.

but when i was 15, 16, 17—whether we were walking through parts of detroit after bar close that we prolly shouldn't have, or at the all ages venue in the burbs that turned out to be connected to a police station(!?)—he made me feel safe, that i belonged, that i was capable.
