@Curi_Christian Everything is heresy to those of a slightly different orthodoxy. Piety and blasphemy are not two sides of the same coin, they are the same side of the coin.
@AlteredEggoEgo@Curi_Christian Human beings are capable of altruism. For giving of themselves, even sacrificially. Is an omni-max deity capable of this? Individuals like Socrates and Spartacus literally died for wisdom and liberty. Permanently, not for a mere three days.
@Curi_Christian Virtue improves the society in which it is practiced. Most of the time virtue also improves the life of the individual cultivating it (notable exception for altruistic acts).
Else, why call it virtue?
@sashuwa77246@darwintojesus Wait . . . "liberty and justice for ALL"?
Isn't this how you get woke nonsense like universal suffrage, the civil rights act, and the 5th amendment?
@sashuwa77246@darwintojesus "Not a democracy!"
I'd explain that republics are a subset of democracies, but I doubt someone who can't understand civics can understand set theory.
@darwintojesus Maybe those are just pretty sounding words without any religious meaning, like "In God We Trust" or "To Serve And Protect"?
Don't argue with me. Tell the Supreme Court of the United States of America.
@strikhedonia01@AstroTroy@LilaGraceRose What does "worked out ok" mean? For most of history, women had no agency to leave a marriage, being considered by tradition and law more like property possessed by the man, than an equal partner in a contract.
@Curi_Christian What is hard to understand? There are literally tens of thousands of denominations of Christianity and they vary in the proportion if importance they give to tradition, church history, succession of leadership, and the content and interpretation of scripture.
@AgainstAtheismX "Atheism isn't the default. That's why I believed in 5000 gods until I could examine each claim and found it wanting. I'm down to about 1000 after some 30 years."
"What about from works of fiction like Tolkien or D&D? Do they count?"
" . . . Gods damn it!"
@JohnFugelsang I don't know how to interact with a king.
I guess I'll have to pray to my ancestors for guidance.
Grand-mรจre, grand-pรจre, monsieur la guillotine, entendez ma priรจreโฆ
@darwintojesus I'm not very familiar with them, but I think it was wise of them to point out that piety doesn't have a monopoly on meaning. Substantive philosophy, beautiful art, and practicable ethics are all experienced by secular communities.
@darwintojesus@BlueTimeFairy I agree. It equates theology with virtue. Isn't the satan's theology superior to ours, having direct experience of the divine? While non-Christian individuals like Socrates and Spartacus literally sacrificed their lives for the sake of wisdom or liberation.
@MikeWingerii@secularist85 Murder and child abuse are illegal. There are many fine Christian values by which America has prospered. Charity, patience, forgiveness in some contexts, justice in others. Wisdom to discern the difference.
Of course, these virtues didn't originate nor are unique to Christianity
@adamD255143688@JohnFugelsang You may be right. We should all be very forthright with our identities and serious in our presentation of ourselves with regard . . . oh . . .
Yeah. I guess this got awkward.
@gatorgar I know you're just pandering. Get in some anti-vax nutters. Now that you are called out, you try to backpedal, but not so hard that you lose them?
No medical professional claims 100% efficacy for vaccines. This doesn't negate that the tech works. See: gun analogy above.
