for tragedy to burn
we shelter from hurt
we close off the pain
hoping #sombre bruises
leave to never return

disguise themselves
as harmless pups.
Their cunning little teeth grow in fast
and meaner than they should.
They sink their sharpened fangs
deep inside your ventricles and walls,
leave you
near-immortal,
your delicate skin
forever
searing in the sun.

receding slow as the lowest tide
climbing back into her cobbled tower
crumbling, aging, rusting…
waiting an eternity
for the only hand
that wouldn’t let go

begin to burn and chafe
when the rope
begins to stretch and fray
when I know
the only choice
...is letting go before it breaks
...is walk away
...is save some tiny bit of strength
so that I may live
to breathe again some day.
