Success of this method to suppress pests could reduce reliance on chemical insecticides, improve sustainability of apple production, and reduce waste in the form of pest-damaged fruits. More information about this method could help to encourage its implementation by growers.
I am investigating the potential of wildflower habitat to encourage the natural predators and parasites of apple pests into commercial orchards. These are referred to as the โnatural enemiesโ of pests.
Fruit damaged by the rosy apple aphid can be malformed and extremely reduced in size (right) compared to an undamaged apple (left). This damage can lead to huge economic losses for commercial growers, thus aphid control is of high importance. #AgriFoodBecause@SCI_AgriFood๐๐๐ฟ
