What good is safety if the price it costs is the freedom that makes a society even worth protecting?

Benjamin Franklin’s famous warning came out of a very real dispute in Pennsylvania in 1755. The colony was facing violence along its frontier, and the Assembly was debating how much power and money should be devoted to defense. Franklin and the Assembly argued that protecting people mattered, but so did protecting the rights of the people being governed.

That distinction still matters. Safety is important. Nobody wants their family or community exposed to unnecessary danger. But there's always a temptation to accept greater control in exchange for the promise of greater security. The problem is that once people become comfortable surrendering freedom whenever they're afraid, it can become difficult to know where that surrender ends.

Liberty requires accepting some responsibility and some risk. It means trusting people with the ability to make decisions for themselves rather than assuming that every problem can be solved by giving more authority to someone else.

Franklin wasn't arguing that safety was worthless. His own actions during the crisis included helping provide arms and supporting measures for the defense of Pennsylvania. His point was that security should not become an excuse for abandoning essential liberty.

That's a lesson worth remembering whenever fear makes giving up freedom seem like an acceptable solution.

How many people today really understand that freedom is more important than safety, and that you can't truly have the latter apart from the former?
