You don't build capable people by doing everything for them.
You build them by doing less for them as they become capable of doing more.
And eventually, you should be able to look around and realize; they don't need me anymore.
That's leadership.
One things I've learned in leadership is that people don't become capable simply because we give them responsibilities.
Sometimes, we give people a task, watch them struggle, take it back from them, and then complain that they can't do anything without us.
3. Gradually give them more
Don't throw someone into a major responsibility and expect instant maturity. Give them small responsibilities, coach them, review their work, and increase their responsibility as they grow.
An organization can tell its people, “We need to be more innovative, accountable, collaborative, customer-focused, or performance-driven.” But if the systems within the organization continue to reward the old behaviours, the culture will eventually return to what it was.
