I'm not Charles Murray, but I own all of his books and tweet quotes from them: one book in the morning, a second in the afternoon, and a third in the evening.
30+year 1on1 private academic coach…I’ve had a few small chats with Mr Murray on X…
This is correct…IQ is real and highly heritable, but step back…humans have been teaching each other more academically minded stuff for more than 3,000 years…Do we really believe there’s some undiscovered better way to teach?
Humans ain’t that complicated…
We only have a few inputs and outputs…wash, rinse, repeat
“Transfers Are Not Public Goods. The benefits that a government provides to the governed span a range from public goods classically defined at one extreme to pure transfers at the other.”
“In large groups of children, academic achievement is tied to academic ability. No pedagogical strategy, no improvement in teacher training, no increase in homework, no reduction in class size can break that connection.”
“The UBI does not require much in the way of bureaucratic apparatus. Its administration consists of computerized electronic deposits to bank accounts, plus resources to identify fraud.”
“If you define grade level as the tasks that someone of average academic ability can be taught to do, then the proportion of students who are not at grade level will be approximately 50 percent.”
“If the SAT is biased against blacks, it will *underpredict* their college performance. If tests were biased in this way, blacks as a group would do better in college than the admissions office expected based just on their SATs.”
“Tests are used to predict things—most commonly, to predict performance in school or on the job. …A test with high validity predicts accurately; a test with poor validity makes many mistakes.…The SAT is used…because it has a certain validity in predicting college performance.”
“a B/W difference can be problematic to American society as a whole. At the lower end of the IQ range, there are approximately equal numbers of blacks and whites. But throughout the upper half of the range, the disproportions … at any given IQ level are huge.”
“A variant of the NIT [negative income tax] puts it within our power to end poverty, provide for comfortable retirement and medical care for everyone, and—as a bonus that is probably more important than any of the immediate effects—revitalize American civil society.”
“One of the most irresponsible trends in modern education has been the reduction in rigorous, systematic assessment of the abilities of all the students in their care.”
“In the United States, there are about six whites for every black. This means that the IQ overlap of the two populations as they actually exist in the United States looks very different from the [equal distribution]”
“To demand that students meet standards that have been set without regard to their academic ability is wrong and cruel to the children who are unable to meet those standards.”
a difference of 1.2 standard deviations means considerable overlap in the cognitive ability distribution… For any equal number of blacks and whites, a large proportion have IQs that can be matched up. This is the distribution to keep in mind whenever thinking about individuals.”
