This is the merciful way to describe what is happening. The number of soldiers, essentially light to very light infantry, is growing by some 3-400 to compensate somewhat for the fact that what has been an Armoured Battlegroup so far is losing the armour. Tanks and IFVs leave without replacement.

The UK is effectively out of the armour game for the next N years: WARRIOR will be entirely gone by the end of next year and no replacement program is mentioned in the DiP. Before 2030, there will be no IFV solution.

Challenger tanks need to go through the CR3 rebuild; the units need a respite, and after that the small heavy armour force will need to focus on readiness for the NATO Strategic Reserve role. The same 3 small regiments cannot be in Estonia and at high readiness for SACEUR use across the whole of the potential european front at the same time.

Besides, the chances of achieving CR3 IOC next year are evidently zero at this point, although they are not yet telling us what the delay looks like.

To compensate somewhat, light infantry numbers are going up by a few hundreds and there will be lots of talk about the OWEs and drones.

4X, from 1 Division, is the brigade that's taking over the Estonia task responsibility. The British Army is still working to Project WAVELL assumptions/force structure as graphically represented below. The switch to a 1XX-led Estonia role was fully anticipated and has been coming for a while.

Under WAVELL, an IFV is supposed to happen to equip the 4 infantry battalions in 12X and 20X, 3rd Division, as Armoured Infantry.
That, in turn, is meant to allow the BOXER APCs to move to 1 or both of 7X and 4X in 1st Division.

But that's all in the 2030 world, assuming the Spending Review next year truly makes money available in numbers at least close to what the DiP promises.

I'm not holding my breath on that.

NISTA might have just revealed UK has CANCELLED its BOXER Batch 2 procurement plans altogether.

Circa 2 billions have vanished from the plan due to "re-prioritisation" of further procurements and DiP outcomes.

Compared to financial year 24/25-Q4, the project's departmentally agreed Whole Life Cost at 25/26-Q4 (measured in £m) decreased from £7009.30M to £5150.92M. This is primarily due to the following factors.

1. The Programme Whole Life Cost Budget (not cost) to Full Operating Capability has decreased since Q4 24/25 as a consequence of funding removal following Army re-prioritisation of further procurements and Defence Investment Plan Outcomes.

2. There is an ongoing conversation with industry on treatment of contractual VoP (Variation of Price), caused by inflationary supply chain pressures which are also awaiting the Defence Investmetn Plan.
