*Quecholcoatl and Axayacatl II* is the second painting in my two-part interpretation of the encounter between Quecholcoatl, a celebrated singer from Chalco, and Axayacatl, the Mexica *tlahtoani*.

Their story survives through Nahua song and history, but I imagine another possibility within it: attraction between the powerful ruler of Tenochtitlan and the beautiful singer whose performance captivated him. Queer history often survives in fragments, leaving art to explore what the record cannot tell us.
