@paranoiacs I also love how it plays like a bunch of movie scenes that have been shot but not yet edited into a traditional three act structure (unless you count burning his notebooks as the climax)
@johnmoe There's other things I loved A Whole Lot then suddenly I was done. Mid-90s Simpsons. Aimee Mann after Bachelor No.2. In the earlymid 80s it was The Pretenders — I adored Hynde's songwriting, then after Learning To Crawl I was done. My REM love lasted longer than a lotta things.
@cvdall@johnmoe This describes me ...also I am willing to accept that there are great albums after New Adventures and have even tried them (my wife bought me one of them thinking I'd be excited, but sadly I was past my barrier and had to feign excitement)....
@parkerdesautel@MrRidleyKemp Sure wish they'd chosen a different name. They're terrific. The same for our hometown-hero band (a band with two hometowns, actually), The Vulgar Boatmen. They are literate and yearning and rocking and they chose a name that people equate to Throbbing Gristle.
Style Lessons from George Costanza
In this thread, I will talk about some dos and don'ts of men's tailoring using one of my favorite style icons, George Costanza. 🧵
Capitol Records Office 1965
“So, Brian. What’s the new single about ?”
“Oh, it’s just a fun song about how much we love California girls”
“Sounds great”
“Yeah, just one thing, I’ve wrote an intro for it that stops time, wrapping itself around your very soul, stirring

@pulmyears@paranoiacs@sterlewine I especially vibed with Stephen's line about "understanding the form while questioning the intent." (That seems to describe the approach you take in a lot of your Twitter Capsule Reviews and other writing as well, Elizabeth.)
@paranoiacs In college when this appeared (it came first as a 45, "Back on the Chain Gang" A side / "My City Was Gone" B side, the only way you could initially enjoy it); don't know if I've felt the same excitement for a rock event unfolding in real time... maybe REM's early 80s run...
@melnickjeffrey1 My nomination is Tom Petty playing "Feel a Whole Lot Better" and even though he still sounds like himself, him and Mike Campbell and Jeff Lynn nail the guitar jangle and the harmonies and the, oh, like, the mood of the original. Just in higher fidelity.
@KirkusReviews@JennaBushHager @HodaAndJenna Quick idea for Jenna: Kirkus recently thumbs-upped a children's book about gratitude, written by me and drawn by award-winning Penelope Dullaghan (her illustrations just honored by @SOI128) called "Thank You, Day!" Just in time to feature for Thanksgiving? https://t.co/HdjIdlGOwP
President Lyndon B. Johnson was finicky about room temperature, and when he was Vice President, he developed a habit of haranguing the flight crew about lowering or raising the cabin temperature. After a while, the crew got tired of his shenanigans, so they installed a "fake" temperature control in the Conference Room. This appeasement was successful, and Johnson was so pleased with manipulating the controls himself that he didn't even notice when the temperature remained the same.
@JayneMoobs Have not yet spotted any Teenage Fanclub. Any of them are great but I’m partial to Songs from Northern Britain… and I second the Aimee Mann. If Whatever is unavailable, I’m With Stupid and Bachelor No. 2 work well—personally I’m partial to her Jon Brion years.
