Myth 1: That Britain abolished slavery around the world. Fact: Britain’s limited abolition was accompanied by the continued coercion of Black & Brown people to supply unpaid labour across the Empire.

I’ve always loved this mysterious picture attributed to Cornelis Bisschop. An open door, a woman’s discarded jacket and shoes, and a painting-within-a-painting make up the suggestive elements of the scene, like a genre picture evacuated of its protagonists.
