A few months ago, I came face-to-face with death for the first time. I literally saw my life flash before my eyes.

At first, I thought it was just normal stress and fatigue, but I later realized it was far more serious than that.

For almost two years, I was unable to go on annual leave because of workload and the belief that I could handle the job better than most others. Gradually, malaria found its way into my system, while proper rest remained out of reach. The HR department wasn't helping matters either, as employees were rarely encouraged to take time off.

My job requires a great deal of critical thinking, but unknown to me, the malaria was progressively affecting my health.

I finally forced myself to go on leave after two months of back-and-forth discussions where I got my supervisor and HR to approve my request. Two days before the leave was to commence, I became ill and had to stay home for treatment. Thankfully, my team members were supportive and assured me they would cover my responsibilities and assist my relief officer.

I had planned a three-week vacation with my woman. Flights were booked, hotels reserved, and everything was set. Unfortunately, my health had other plans. The trip was cancelled.

One day, I went to the barbershop to get a fresh haircut ahead of the vacation. Before the barber even started, I suddenly became unaware of my surroundings. The next thing I knew, I was in a completely different reality, disconnected from everything around me.

About 30 minutes later, I regained consciousness. I had suffered a seizure caused by severe dehydration and the effects of malaria. I was rushed back to the hospital, where doctors diagnosed cerebral malaria.

I was immediately transferred to a teaching hospital, where treatment began. Between tests, consultations, monitoring, and medication, the recovery process lasted about a month. The doctors left no stone unturned in ensuring that whatever was threatening my health was completely addressed.

Today, I am back. Stronger. Healthier. Better.

I can boldly say that I am free from every ailment that plagued me during that period.

Please, no matter how busy you are, make time to check your health regularly. Go for medical tests when you can. Listen to your body. It often whispers before it screams.

One lesson I learned from this experience is simple:

No employer can promise you a lifetime of employment, and you cannot afford to give any employer a lifetime commitment at the expense of your health.

Work is important. Your life is more important.

At the point of rescue, you said you suspected two kidnappers. Why were they merely "suspected" if that was the exact location of the rescue operation?

Rifles were reportedly recovered after the suspects fled. Were your officers not trained to either engage, pursue, or apprehend fleeing suspects?

I'm very sure you deployed about 10–15 armed officers, yet none could shoot, chase, or overpower two suspects?

And where is the video evidence of what transpired from start to finish and not a carefully edited clip that looks like a scene from a Nollywood production.
