@RowennaDavis Thank you for running such an energetic and positive campaign. I appreciate all the effort you and your @CroydonLabour colleagues put into this.
@Luis_Cook1 Pretty much. It’s the same model as they use in Doncaster.
This is purely an educated guess, but I expect the Conservatives to hold the mayoralty but lose councillors.
I expect the Green surge to hurt Labour more than Reform surging hurts the Conservatives here.
@Luis_Cook1 Yeah, I can imagine Reform doing well in some of the southern wards, though.
I wouldn’t be surprised if five or so Reform councillors were elected.
Very good piece here on the insane demands on MPs from constituency casework, which has been rising almost exponentially since Covid
It's clear we need to completely rethink how our democracy works, and I think this is a good opportunity.
We have a system where councillors have very few powers, and MPs' actual role in debating and developing policy has been neutered.
We should look at devolving constituency casework largely to councillors, who should be properly-paid full-time jobs. This would have the added benefit of possibly improving the quality of local government politicians.
Meanwhile, a future government that finally removes quangos and restores democratic and judicial roles to parliament can focus on letting MPs be MPs, rather than glorified social workers.
There's a big problem here, but also a big opportunity to restore faith in politics and MPs.
