I came to dig six fence post holes alone.

America had other plans, and America does not ask.

I planned this as a warrior plans a siege. Three days. One shovel. No help, no mercy, no witnesses.

I marked the ground at dawn. I bowed to the dirt. In my country, a man digs his own holes or he is not a man.

I lasted thirty-one minutes.

Neil said, "That's a two-man job."

I did not ask who Neil was. Neil was simply there, with a shovel, already at war with hole number two.

Then a man in a bass fishing shirt appeared and handed out leather work gloves. Six pairs. He carries six pairs. I do not know his name. I do not know why.

Then came a power drill the size of a small dog, carried by a man who said four words: "Clay soil. You'll cry."

Understand this. I asked no one. In America, help is an ambush.

You cannot see it coming. You cannot fight it off. One moment you are alone with your honor, the next there are five trucks on your lawn and a cooler you did not purchase.

At hour two, a gray truck stopped. A stranger stepped down, unloaded a gas-powered auger, and drilled six perfect holes in eleven minutes.

He refused water. He refused a name. He nodded once and drove away.

I asked the men who he was. They shrugged.

"We call him the Auger Man."

My three days of suffering were finished in three hours. My siege collapsed. My solitude was routed in broad daylight by men I never summoned.

A warrior trains his whole life to face any enemy. Nothing prepares you for a neighborhood that loves you without permission.

The fence is done. It is the strongest fence on this street. It had better be. Seven men are watching.

Sir, if you are reading this. The fence stands.

Pulling into pump number six at an Ohio highway station, I stepped out into the crisp morning air and realized my vehicle's fuel door was on the complete opposite side of the steel pump.

The tank was on the left. The black hose was on the right.

Most drivers get back into their seats, start their engine, and perform an embarrassing three-point turn while other customers watch.

A samurai does not retreat his chariot for three feet of rubber.

I gripped the black nozzle firmly. I braced both feet against the concrete, bent my knees, and pulled the reinforced hose with the full strength of a heavy archer drawing a war bow.

The thick rubber stretched tight across the trunk of my silver sedan, groaning with sixty pounds of mechanical tension.

An older gentleman fueling a red pickup truck named Dale watched my feat of strength with wide, admiring eyes.

You got enough slack there, partner? Dale called out.

I did not flinch. The hose was stretched straight as an iron rod across my rear windshield.

The tension tests my grip, I shouted back. But the fuel shall reach the tank!

I locked the trigger with a sharp click. The high-octane nectar flowed smoothly through the stretched black tendon into my car.

Dale laughed, raised his coffee cup, and said, that is some true pioneer grit right there.

I released the hose with controlled martial grace and closed my gas cap like a victorious warrior sheathing his sword.

Others call pulling the gas hose across your car an embarrassing driving mistake.
I call it the heavy longbow draw of the fueling station, where a man refuses to reposition his chariot, bends sixty pounds of rubber tension, and takes his fuel with absolute stubborn glory.
