Ex-MLA Pravat Ranjan Biswal Likely to Join BJP Tomorrow, 10 Days After Orissa HC Refused to Quash Seashore Chit Fund Case
Former BJD MLA Pravat Ranjan Biswal is set to join the BJP, days after a big setback in the Seashore chit fund case.
On July 2, 2026, the Orissa High Court dismissed his plea seeking to quash the CBI proceedings.
The High Court directed the Special CBI Court to complete the trial within six months, stressing expeditious disposal.
Pravat Biswal had moved the High Court citing delays in the trial, but the court refused to halt the criminal proceedings.
The CBI alleged Pravat Biswal and his wife were involved in a ₹25 lakh land transaction linked to funds allegedly diverted from the Seashore Group.
According to the agency, the money was paid through cheques, later returned in cash after the land deal was cancelled, with documents allegedly fabricated.
Charges include criminal conspiracy, cheating, criminal breach of trust and forgery.
Pravat Biswal was arrested by the CBI in 2017 and granted bail by the High Court in 2018.
In 2022, the Enforcement Directorate attached assets worth ₹3.92 crore in connection with the case under the PMLA.
The Seashore scam is one of Odisha's biggest chit fund scams, with allegations that thousands of investors were cheated of hundreds of crores of rupees.
Pravat Biswal, a three-time MLA from Cuttack-Choudwar and former senior BJD leader, was denied a party ticket in 2019 and is now set to join the BJP while the criminal trial continues.
