🚨 Steven Gerrard on Jordan Henderson’s influence at Chelsea:

“I’ll tell you something I never expected to say: I actually enjoy watching Jordan Henderson play for Chelsea.

Not the shirt. I’m still getting used to the shirt.

But the football? Absolutely.

People see a midfielder of his age arrive at a club with all those young players and immediately start asking how many minutes he’s got left in his legs.

I understand it. Football moves quickly. Everybody wants the next 20-year-old who can run all day.

But sometimes a young team doesn’t need another player who can run all day. It needs somebody who knows when everybody should stop running.

That’s Jordan.

I played with him at Liverpool. I know how much talking he does. There were days I’d hear him organising people in training and think, Jordan, we’ve only just come out for the warm-up.

He’d be pointing at somebody, telling somebody else to move five yards, asking why the full-back was so high.

And if you told him to be quiet, he’d probably tell you where you should be standing as well.

But there’s a reason for it.

He’s constantly looking at the whole pitch. Not just the ball, not just the man in front of him. He’s thinking about what happens when Chelsea lose possession, where the defenders need an option, and how quickly they can get the ball to the attacking players.

Watch him closely. A defender gives him the ball under pressure. He doesn’t always turn and try something spectacular.

Sometimes it’s one touch, a simple pass, and suddenly Chelsea have moved past the pressure.

Nobody in the crowd stands up and applauds a five-yard pass. But two passes later, Palmer or Neto is running at somebody, and that move began with Henderson making the correct decision.

That’s the bridge between defence and attack people talk about. It’s not glamorous, but take it away and you notice very quickly.

Against Everton, that’s what stood out to me. They’re a difficult side to play against. They came in unbeaten, and Chelsea needed to keep their heads when it was still 0–0.

Jordan gives you that.

I can imagine one of the younger lads getting frustrated and saying, ‘Hendo, there’s no space.’

And Jordan saying, ‘There is. You’re just standing in it.’

That’s him. He’ll tell you the truth, then give you the ball again so you can fix it.

And I think Xabi Alonso understands exactly what he’s got. Xabi was a midfielder who valued intelligence. He knows a team full of talented attackers still needs someone making sure the game doesn’t become chaos.

People will talk about Neto’s two goals, and rightly so. He won Chelsea the match.

But there are players who win you moments, and players who help make those moments possible.

Henderson has spent his career doing the second job.

I know Chelsea fans have had some outstanding midfielders over the years. I’m not going to start comparing him to their legends after a few games.

But I can see why they’re taking to him. He plays like somebody who’s been there for years, and he cares about every little detail as if he’s come through their academy.

And the funniest part is that when Jordan hears people saying he’s too old, I know exactly what he’ll do.

He won’t argue.

He’ll just spend the next 90 minutes telling players 10 years younger than him where to run.

And most of the time, he’ll be right.”
