Retired Navy SEAL Glen “Bub” Doherty was killed on September 12, 2012, while defending Americans during the attack on the US diplomatic mission and CIA annex in Benghazi, Libya. He was 42.

Born and raised in Winchester, Massachusetts, he was one of three children, a kid who worked hard and later studied at Embry Riddle University before heading for the mountains of Utah and a life built on adventure. That same drive took him into the Navy SEALs in 1995. His team answered the call after the USS Cole attack, among other missions, and he later served as a sniper during the capture of Tikrit.

By September 2012 he had left the service and was working for the Agency’s Global Response Staff, providing security in Libya, work he expected to be his last assignment. When the diplomatic compound came under fire on the night of September 11, he was still in Tripoli.

With no US air asset available, the quick reaction force (QRF) chartered a local plane and flew themselves to Benghazi, delayed for hours by Libyan security before reaching the CIA annex around 5:15 a.m. He went straight to the roof of one of the compound buildings and joined fellow retired SEAL Tyrone Woods as the enemy, roughly 150 militants strong, spread from the consulate to the annex, now under mortar fire.

Doherty and Woods held that rooftop into the next morning. A mortar round landed near their position and killed them both. They died with Ambassador Chris Stevens and Information Officer Sean Smith: four Americans lost in a single, brutal night.

Legislation was later introduced to award both men the Congressional Gold Medal posthumously. Today he is remembered with a plaque at San Diego’s Mount Soledad Veterans Memorial, a SEAL who left the Navy and kept answering the call anyway, right to the end.
