Friends, I’m immensely happy to announce my second book, The Land of Tears and Hope: The Ukrainian Story.
Pre-order here: https://t.co/TiOLrBhVtE
Many of you know me as a defense reporter who spent years breaking bread with Ukrainian soldiers in trenches.
A blood illness gradually made both that work and military service impossible, so I poured all my passion, my experience, and my love for this country into this book.
It is a journey through more than 1,000 years of our people’s history—from the forest-dwelling Slavic pagan tribes to the princes of ancient Kyiv and the Cossacks of the steppe frontier, through the catastrophes of the 20th century, and into our own age of revolutions and resistance.
This is no history textbook, nor is it just another popular history of Ukraine. What emerged surprised even me. It is a lyrical, epic portrait of Ukraine—its folk memory, myths, symbols, age-old legends, songs, poetry, and sacred places such as Saint Sophia of Kyiv—all that binds people into a nation today.
Ukraine is a land with a deeply complicated history, coveted by many over the centuries, its tragic chapters marked by cruelty and bloodshed.
For centuries, this land has been watered with tears and has repeatedly lost its freedom. Yet Ukraine lived on. Today, Russian propaganda seeks to reduce Ukraine to “Russia’s backyard” or “Little Russia”—an “artificial state” with no culture, language, or history of its own.
In this book, I show that Ukraine has a far greater place in human history and a story to tell, particularly through the lives of some of its remarkable figures, such as Prince Volodymyr, who brought Christianity to the shores of ancient Kyiv, or Serhiy Korolyov, whose genius sent the first human being (and a beautiful Ukrainian song!) into space; or Georgiy Gongadze, the father of modern Ukrainian journalism, whose martyrdom changed this country’s fate forever.
And all of this is illustrated with drawings by Taras Shevchenko, Ukraine’s great national poet and artist—spiritual father and prophet of the Ukrainian people.
This book is written from the perspective of my generation of Ukrainians, who came to believe in this country, resolved to make it a better place, and are now fighting to save it in Europe’s most terrible war of aggression since World War II.
For us, this is also a land of hope—the hope that we can finally break this cruel cycle of history, defend this country’s freedom and independence, and secure the right to pursue happiness in our own home.
My deepest hope is that one day people will say: “If you want to understand Ukraine, why it fought that war, and why it inspired so many around the world, read this book.”
Out November 10 from @BloomsburyPub!

To go from cooking for their customers to serving hundreds of meals in the middle of an emergency, many of WCK’s local restaurant partners have to adjust their routines. WCK is there to guide them, helping local chefs stay organized and build on the processes they already have in place. Get a glimpse of what this training looks like with Chef Ale in Quibdó, Colombia, where we’re working with local restaurants after last month’s earthquake. #ChefsForColombia
#ChefsForColombia
After last week’s devastating flooding, many people have had to evacuate their homes. As soon as they arrive at evacuation centers across Bidur, WCK and our local partners are there waiting with hot meals. Families can sit, share a meal together, and take a breath before figuring out their next steps. #ChefsForNepal
Russia has shifted its tactics, launching 24/7 attacks on @Ukrzaliznytsia with a specific focus on locomotives and trains. Targeting civilians is a deliberate, insidious strategy timed during Ukraine's critical air defense shortage https://t.co/au5YQ7AmF2
Witkoff & Kushner just left Kyiv talking about Putin’s “aspirations.”
Now the city is covered in fire and smoke after a huge missile attack.
This is what Putin’s “aspirations” actually look like.
Los ataques son diarios! Trenes llevando a civiles!!!
Instead of a thousand words.

Happy birthday to my incomparable wife Michele Norris. You are as beautiful today as you were those decades ago. The love of my life and the soul of our family.
For many families in Gaza, meals from WCK's network of kitchens are their only reliable source of food. This week, the team at the Ahel Al Kheir community kitchen served koshari—a traditional dish with fried rice, noodles, lentils, and chickpeas. #ChefsForGaza
Mekh was at home in Bidur, Nepal, when she heard shouting outside. Suddenly, her son rushed in and told her they needed to evacuate—flooding and mudslides were sweeping through the village. As they escaped, Mekh's feet became stuck in the mud. She tried to move, but couldn't. Her son and their neighbors worked to dig her feet out of the mud, carrying her the rest of the way towards a local school as the water rose.
WCK's #ChefsForNepal teams met with Mekh, who has lost her home of 40 years, her farm, and her important identifying documents to the floods. We served her a meal while she shared her story. When crisis strikes, our teams are committed to comforting impacted community members with a hot meal and a listening ear.

.@jaredkushner is in Kyiv when not a single drone or missile has fallen while he was there! He doesn’t understand war…he doesn’t understand suffering…someone who doesn’t understand can not be leading a ceasefire /peace deal…and more when he seems to take the side of the one that began the war…😢
