There is something psychologists call the IKEA effect. It is a cognitive bias that helps explain why people place higher value on things they helped to build or create.

The more you invest in your spouse, the more you value him/her.

A woman who has been there for the man through his phases of growth is likely to value him more, because she has a stake in his development. Same goes for men.
