Today, we’re introducing our Academic Integrity in GenAI principles, launched in collaboration with @Chegg's Academic Advisory Board members and the UK's Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI).

As universities and students worldwide are increasingly leveraging GenAI to support learning, we want to continue prioritizing responsible adoption, and these principles are designed to guide ethical GenAI use and maintain academic standards. We invite higher education groups, policymakers, and think tanks to join this important conversation.

In the rapidly evolving landscape of GenAI, ensuring no student is left behind starts with equitable access.

At Chegg, we recognize the importance of providing fair and equitable access to our tools, regardless of a user’s background, nationality, personal impairments, or economic status. While technology and generative AI are transforming support for students with learning differences by providing personalized tools to enhance their learning experiences, many still depend on supplementary resources such as online tools and counseling services to address learning gaps.

Expanding academic support for these students can be achieved through initiatives like improved access to assistive technologies, enhanced tutoring services, and the development of personalized learning programs. By integrating these strategies, higher education can build more inclusive environments where students with learning differences thrive.

Keeping up with the rapidly changing landscape of GenAI-enabled tools isn’t just beneficial––it's essential.

Educational policies and accreditation standards can change with little notice, and legal responses to the development and use of GenAI-enabled tools can differ by region or country. To navigate this, we at @Chegg stay informed and engaged in policy developments both where we operate and where our users are, considering varying global standards and academic disciplines.

We believe a consistent, risk-based #AI framework is needed to provide clear guidance and avoid local laws impeding innovation and progress. A level playing field for AI development and use requires global cooperation and coordination, and we encourage policymakers to consider this approach when shaping regulations and standards for #GenAI.

We recognize the importance of adequate training for those overseeing AI systems and believe human oversight is crucial to ensuring the quality of educational content. Human-in-the-loop machine learning leverages human feedback to eliminate errors in training data and improve accuracy. An agile approach to legal and policy issues reflects our commitment to academic integrity and ethical responsibility in serving users.

Building transparency into data processes creates a foundation for meaningful conversations about responsibly using #GenAI in education.

At @Chegg, we maintain several processes designed to provide users with control over certain data. Users and, in some cases, non-users may request the removal of information or personal data for various reasons, including intellectual property rights, privacy rights, or other concerns relating to specific types of content.

Our latest report reveals a troubling reality: most participants shared that their #LearningDifferences significantly affect their #MentalHealth, often resulting in heightened #Anxiety, feelings of inadequacy, and low self-esteem.

To address this, institutions can expand mental health support by establishing dedicated spaces that provide personalized care tailored to each student’s unique needs. These targeted efforts can play a vital role in fostering both the well-being and academic success of students with learning differences.

To ensure our academic support upholds the highest standards of #AcademicIntegrity, we strive for clarity and reasonable transparency concerning how content is used to develop our #GenAI-enabled tools.

This transparency boosts users’ confidence in GenAI-enabled tools, facilitates integration into educational workflows, and encourages ethical product development practices, particularly as the outputs may be subject to external scrutiny.

We also support continued research and development into best practices for explainability, transparency, and auditing, and we discourage “one-size-fits-all” approaches that do not consider specific use cases.

Are students with #LearningDifferences finding the support they need on campus?

Our report highlights that many of these students face barriers like reduced confidence and challenges navigating academic and social settings. Nearly half reported often not knowing how to ask for special arrangements—highlighting a crucial gap in communication regarding access to available resources.

By implementing proactive communication strategies, institutions can raise awareness, improve resource accessibility, and empower students to seek the help they need. These strategies could not only enhance academic outcomes but also contribute to a more inclusive campus environment.

Upholding integrity and trustworthiness starts with addressing accuracy and bias in #GenAI-enabled tools.

These tools can sometimes produce inaccurate or incomplete outputs, known as “hallucinations” — that’s why we work to ensure users have opportunities to provide feedback on the quality of the information produced.

We also understand that the underlying structure of GenAI-enabled tools can be subject to bias, which may be harmful to users. We proactively work to mitigate inaccuracies and biases, strive to be transparent about the measures deployed to achieve this, and demonstrate our commitment to social responsibility and equity in education.
