Liverpool 7-4 Chelsea

Played at Anfield, this is the highest-scoring game in this fixture’s history.

Just the third match of the first full season after World War Two.
The official attendance was 49,950, but that doesn’t tell the full story: fans kept pouring in until the gates were locked at half-time, and even then thousands more stayed outside, pressed against the walls, just to listen to the roar.

Chelsea found themselves 6-0 down inside 50 minutes, but refused to fold: Len Goulden pulled one back, Jimmy Argue made it 6-2, and Alex Machin scored twice in the space of two second-half minutes to drag it back to 6-4.
Liverpool went on to win 7-4, but because of the Chelsea fightback, this remains one of the great scorelines in this fixture’s history.

Arsenal away throwbacks:

Opening day, 1984/85 season. Chelsea, freshly promoted, away at a much-fancied Arsenal side at Highbury. Nobody gave the newly-promoted Blues a chance .

Kerry Dixon had other ideas: a stunning strike in front of the Clock End, sending the away end into pandemonium. 1-1.
Dixon later said the streets around Highbury were “a sea of blue” before kick-off, and by his own estimate there were around 20,000 Chelsea fans inside the ground that day, packed into all four corners including the North Bank.

Here’s that iconic photo of Dixon, arms outstretched in celebration, it became one of the defining images of Chelsea’s mid-80s rise.

Chelsea’s final ever visit to the old Highbury ground, and we made it count: Arjen Robben opened the scoring, then a brilliant Joe Cole solo goal sealed a 2-0 win.

Biggest away win in Emirates history - May 2009
Guus Hiddink’s Chelsea thrashed Arsenal 4-1 at the Emirates, their best away league result over Arsenal since 1970. Nicolas Anelka scored the pick of the goals, Alex, Malouda and a Toure OG were the other scorers that day.

Happy birthday to Chelsea cult hero Pat Nevin who turns 63 today.

He is recognised as one of the most naturally gifted players ever to wear the shirt.
Signed from Clyde in 1983 for £95,000, ‘Wee Pat’ spent five years dazzling Stamford Bridge with close control most fans hadn’t seen the like of before, helping Chelsea win the Second Division title in 1984 and picking up the Supporters’ Player of the Year award that same season.
A genuinely different kind of footballer, on and off the pitch - as comfortable talking about post-punk music as he was dribbling past three defenders.

He moved to Everton in 1988, but Chelsea fans of that era still talk about his dribbling as some of the most entertaining football ever seen at the Bridge. Happy birthday, Wee Pat.
