A white bison calf was born at Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge in Iowa on April 30th. Odds about one in a million.

The refuge has run a bison herd since the mid-1990s. All 81 animals trace back to Yellowstone and Wind Cave. In thirty years they had never seen a white one.

To the Lakota, Sioux, and Dakota nations a white bison birth is sacred — a sign of hope.

By May the roads outside the refuge were backed up with cars. People driving from Des Moines just to see it. Refuge manager Scott Gilje said visitor numbers had tripled.

Deniz was 16. He was used to pull carriages around central park so his human could make money. All day, every day. Deniz collapsed and died on the pavement in the park yesterday.
