I highly doubt that (in a Middle Eastern census) any Circassian self-identifies as Jewish. On the other hand, I know for a fact that many Circassians identify as Arab. In Israel Circassians are integrated. In Arab countries, there's constant pressure to assimilate.

I was taught that Circassians inhabited a certain region of the Caucasus. I was not taught they had an outright state with defined borders. But again I didn't have an education revolved around Circassian identity.

I doubt there will be away for me to accurately specify my ethnicity. I have to settle for either "Middle Eastern" or "White". The term "Caucasian" is hijacked to mean European.

There will be a box to select 'Islam'.

Jews will have to write in their religion in a separate box while Christians can choose from several selected denominations or they will need to write in 'Christian'.

Islam also has different denominations EG Sunni or Shia yet the generic term 'Islam' is provided with a box.

The first box will be given to 'No religion'.

In our estimation this will contribute to an undercount of both Jews and Christians while making it easy for some to just tick a box will likely lead to higher numbers selecting those options.

The census has an important impact on funding and planning for Australia's future. Who stands to gain from this choice of lay-out?
