ARRESTED: The driver of a bus that crashed into street vendors and two vehicles in Ondangwa this afternoon has been arrested and charged with culpable homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol, police have confirmed.
Oshana Police Regional Commander Commissioner Andreas Shilelo said one man died on the spot, while four women were injured and taken to Onandjokwe Intermediate Hospital for treatment.
Shilelo said one of the injured women is in critical condition, while the other three are responding to treatment. Another woman was reportedly in shock but was not physically injured.
Shilelo said the bus veered off the road and struck vendors who were selling their goods behind the pavement before colliding with two vehicles in the area.
He confirmed that the driver was arrested and blood samples taken at the hospital indicate that “he was heavily under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash”.
He said the body of the deceased was taken to the police mortuary for forensic examination and further investigation.
Shilelo said police had not yet properly informed the next of kin and would do so in the coming hours before releasing further details.
Police investigations into the crash are continuing.
