Polyphenols slow brain aging by improving blood sugar control.
In a new study, people who consumed a low-calorie Mediterranean diet that included a polyphenol-rich green shake and several cups of green tea per day experienced less brain atrophy (assessed using MRI of the hippocampus) after 18 months than groups who consumed a Mediterranean diet or a healthy control diet that were lower in polyphenols.
The polyphenol-rich diet also led to greater improvements in glycemic control—58% of participants in the polyphenol-rich diet group had improved glycemic control compared to 32% and 29% of participants in the Mediterranean diet and healthy diet groups, respectively.
These findings are supported by the well-known relationship between metabolic health and brain health.
Glucose control is a modifiable risk factor for cognitive decline—glucose levels that fall within the high-normal range are associated with an atrophying of the hippocampus!
Polyphenols may benefit glucose control by exhibiting antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, improving insulin sensitivity, and inhibiting glucose absorption.
Another finding from this study was that polyphenol-rich foods were independently associated with brain and metabolic benefits. The participants who reported consuming the shake more than 3 times per week and green tea 2 or more times per week had the greatest improvements in glucose control biomarkers (e.g., fasting glucose and HbA1c) and a more potent slowing of brain atrophy.
Regardless of diet, improvements in glucose control biomarkers and inflammation were linked to less brain aging in the hippocampus and the most substantial improvements were observed in participants whose HbA1c levels went from prediabetic or diabetic levels to normal levels (below 5.7%).
The reduction in glycemic biomarkers had an independent effect on the neuroprotective benefits of the diets and therefore, glucose control may play a major role in attenuating neurodegeneration, with polyphenols having an additive benefit.
