On the day Bobby Fischer would have celebrated his 71st birthday, Garry Kasparov paid a visit to his grave in Selfoss, Iceland. It was a historic moment for chess: arguably the two greatest players of the game never met, and so they were never as close to each other.
Fischer (b. 1943) and Kasparov (b. 1963) did not play each other because their chess careers did not coincide in time. Fischer, in effect, ended his career after winning the world title in 1972, while Kasparov began to compete internationally in the Sokolsky Memorial (1978) and Banja Luka
