Exciting @mycountycouncil & @HLFEastMids funded project to make this a place to enjoy & explore heritage, volunteer in archaeology. Inc. buildings restoration.
#DrawingAugust It's a real shame @ChesterFarmNcc is closed at the moment, but we walked along from the embankment in town to get this view from the north side of the #Nene
Hoping that everyone who has been on site during the past three weeks is having a well-earned rest today. Very many thanks for your support to all #volunteers and students @ArchAncHistLeic
In the last two days we dug a section across one of those #Roman ditches into which huge amounts of rubbish got thrown. The surviving pottery was amazing. #Archaeology
I've just finished an amazing 3 weeks with the lovely Staff, volunteers & students on this year's archaeological excavation @ChesterFarmNcc (thanks for the opportunity)
Lots of learning, loads of laughter, as well as proper respect for the remains of those uncovered... #TopTeam
Today was the last day on site, sadly. Thanks to all our #volunteers and the students from @ArchAncHistLeic for their hard work and cheerfulness on site. Much has been learned, achieved and enjoyed. #archaeology#teamwork
During the dig we have excavated various inhumations, many in stone-lined graves, plus numerous child burials, some in stone cists. The remains will be sent for scientific analysis, so we can learn more about the late #Roman town’s population. #Archaeology
A lovely sherd of #Samianware that has just been unearthed. This includes the maker’s mark: ‘Macrinus’. A bit of research will identify where in Gaul he worked and where else in England his wares have been found. #Archaeology#Roman
Yesterday and day 1 of week 3, the weather was kind to us. A huge amount of progress was made, thanks to #volunteers and students from @ArchAncHistLeic We are excavating part of a #Roman cemetery, as well as lots of pits and ditches. #archaeology
A number of tours of the landscape and excavation area were provided today. A good time was had by all, learning about the amazing #archaeology and #heritage of this site.
The Brownies from Wollaston @ChesterFarmNcc yesterday, studying finds in order to secure their archaeologist badge. Another first for Chester Farm! #archaeology
It is so wet today that even the sheep are taking cover. We just cannot excavate today. It would mess up the site as well as being dangerous. This weather is so frustrating! #archaeology
The result of my efforts today... #roman#Archaeology
Identified the end of a ditch! What will tomorrow bring? (Hopefully not more chuffin' rain!) 🙏🏽🤲🏽📿 ✡️🕉️
@ChesterFarmNcc
Some #pottery from one of the ditches excavated on Sunday (and now filled with water). Wherever we dig, we find quantities of pottery from across the c400 years of the #Roman small town’s existence.
A fantastic first week of excavations at @ChesterFarmNcc!
Great to meet up with the gang again and meet new people.
Lots still to do - such a shame we were rained off this afternoon 😉🌧️☔️
