Remembering the great Max Roach who was born on this day in 1924. One of the most influential and widely recorded modern percussionists, Roach, by carefully developing thematic ideas on his drums, elevated the percussionist to the equal of melodic improvisers.
Roach co-led a pioneering quintet along with trumpeter Clifford Brown and the percussion ensemble M'Boom. He also made numerous musical statements relating to the civil rights movement.
A broad-based percussionist who was a pioneer in establishing a fixed pulse on the ride cymbal instead of the bass drum, Roach also collaborated with voice, string, and brass ensembles, lectured on college campuses extensively, and composed music for dance, theater, film, and television.
Here, he is performing “The Third Eye”.
