Fred Lester was a Navy corpsman - a combat medic - serving with the 6th Marine Division on Okinawa when he selflessly exposed himself to enemy fire to rescue a wounded Marine lying in the open.
Crawling beneath criss-crossing machine gun fire, Lester was hit several times. He ignored his pain and dragged the wounded Marine to safety.
Too weak to administer aid himself, he instructed other Marines in caring for the wounds of three wounded comrades. He died soon after, succumbing to his wounds while administering aid.
Lester received the Medal of Honor posthumously. Please remember and honor him.
