B12.
Let's put this misinformation to rest once and for all that people who don't eat animals can't get enough B12 and taking supplements is suboptimal!
Tl;dr
1ā£- The B12 in meat is supplemented in animals to begin with.
2ā£- All elderly adults are recommended to take B12 regardless of diet.
3ā£- Vegans can get enough B12.
4ā£- It makes no sense to advocate for eating meat if you really cared about human health.

āāB12 supplementation is unnaturalā
ā Vegans arenāt the only group vulnerable to B12 deficiency without supplementation.
Older adults for example, have less ability to absorb B12 absorption due to age-related changes in gut function. Various conditions that impair gut ability, such as Crohnās disease or gastritis also make people susceptible to deficiency. Without supplements, these people would become B12 deficient no matter what they eat.
All older adults should consider B12 supplementation or fortified foods, regardless of their diet!
Even animals bred for meat, including pigs and chickens, have feedstuffs supplemented with B12. Ruminant animals (e.g. cows, sheep) meanwhile, are supplemented with cobalt, which is then used by the microbes in their guts to produce B12.
Regardless of diet, your B12 source is going to be from one supplement or another; those who decry vegan B12 supplements as being āunnaturalā have no basis for the criticism.
And remember protein bars, protein powders, coke, sausage, pasta, almost any processed food, medications, cell phones, etc. are not natural either!
We should be careful not to fall for the appeal to nature fallacy!
āāAll vegans are B12 deficientā
ā If you leave this thread with only one takeaway, it should be this quote from a German study published last year: āhealthy individuals on plant-based diets can secure an adequate vitamin B12 supply with over-the-counter oral supplementsā. While reports in the past have found lower B12 levels among vegans, lack of awareness was the likely culprit, not supplements being ineffective.
Similarly, other deficiencies are prevalent in nonvegans, such as D3 or iron deficiency which is #1 nutrient deficiency in the world. It doesn't mean people can't get it from their diet or supplement. It means we need to educate people so they get enough of it.
āāVegan B12 supplements are ineffectiveā
ā Bioavailability is a common term that gets thrown around whenever plant-based diets are brought up.
The notion that vegan B12 supplements are less bioavailable (and thus less effective) than meat-derived B12 is plainly false. In fact, the opposite may even be true: a study comparing B12 absorption in fortified cereals vs. pork found the former to be superior. Indeed, they may be about 50% more bioavailable than any B12 in food sources.
āāB12 deficiency is dangerousā
ā A severe B12 deficiency can be dangerous. But thereās no reason to be alarmed as long as you supplement regularly or eat fortified foods.
If you are concerned about your nutrient intake, see a doctor. Treating B12 deficiency is straightforward, involving either injections of B12 or oral supplementation, and recovery is rapid.
The many chronic diseases associated with meat consumption - multiple types of heart disease, diabetes, colorectal cancer etc. - meanwhile, are a different story.
Heart disease is the #1 cause of death in the US, while colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer worldwide. Numerous peer-reviewed studies recognize that a whole-foods, plant-based diet can reduce the risk of these diseases, which is reflected in the nutritional guidelines of various health organizations including:
-Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
-Dietitians of Canada
-The American Heart association
-British Dietetic Association
-Mayo Clinic
-Harvard
People who care about the physical and mental health ought to be the strongest opponents of animal consumption, not its defenders.
I personally get all my B12 from nutritional yeast! I eat a lot of it with almost any food I make! I've been vegan since I started thinking about diet critically, 11 years ago!
Every year I do a full check up, and not only are my B12, protein, and iron levels perfect, but I also manage to donate blood!
If you ever find yourself in a conversation with someone that still has doubts over B12, send them this thread.
