More than 60 sovereign countries trace at least part of their history to British rule, and most now celebrate a national day marking independence or self government. Because so many countries gained independence, especially during the wave of decolonization after the Second World War, there is almost always a former British territory celebrating its independence somewhere in the world.

While many remain members of the Commonwealth, they are fully independent nations, reflecting one of the largest and most influential decolonization movements in modern history.
