We were honored to host @ShibaniMahtani in Chicago, where she once reported and thanked her for deep-dive work in #HongKong & beyond. The gutting of @WaPo is so much more than just one journalist. It reflects a myopic trend to dismiss real journalism when we need it most.
I've been laid off from the Post today, along with too many of my incredible colleagues, after eight incredible years, most of them in Hong Kong and covering China's expansion, a story that will define our generation.
Today in #HongKong, four men in their 20s were sentenced to btw 30 & 37 months in prison for "riot" at police siege of PolyU in Nov 2019. One was only 16 at the time. They were rearrested & charged in 2024. https://t.co/jSfOr1by8s
Brilliant to see so many calls at #June4 vigils around the world for the release of #HongKong#PoliticalPrisoners Chow Hang-tung & Lee Cheuk-yan (here, @SiuTat_Mung in London). Imprisoned since 2021, awaiting verdict in their trial, attention to the great injustice is growing.
In case you were wondering: the former HKETO Director running for a seat in UK local elections as a Reform UK candidate did NOT get elected. This comes a day after the HKETO London Office Manager was convicted of spying on HKers in the UK.

When #JimmyLai was convicted in December 2025, @CongressmanRaja, the former ranking member of @CmteOnCCPDems, called it "a profound injustice and a stark indictment of the #CCP's sustained assault on fundamental rights in #HongKong," adding that Lai "is being punished not for criminal conduct, but for standing on principle — for free speech, free worship, independent journalism, and the democratic rights guaranteed under the Sino-British Joint Declaration."
We call on President Trump (@POTUS) to secure #JimmyLai's release during his upcoming visit to #Beijing.

#HongKongers & allies protested at the HKETO London office this weekend, demanding #CloseHKETO, as the HKETO spy trial continues in London. In the US, you can use @Call4HK's online tool to ask your Congressional reps to pass the #HKETOCertificationAct: https://t.co/kAFG93ucmu
An anonymous petition has called for my expulsion from City University of Hong Kong, following my decision to speak up as a whistleblower in a Hong Kong education scandal involving the app MediSafe, which was suspected of academic misconduct.
What’s concerning is that this petition claimed support from 40 CIOs, a lawmaker, and university professors, yet remained completely anonymous.
It even threatened not to hire CityU graduates and tried to pressure institutions.
That’s not accountability, it’s intimidation.
I still stand by speaking up, and I believe the public can see clearly what this is.

Right on from @benedictrogers:
"In the same week that the Home Office told @finnlau_cd they were still conducting 'good character' checks, 10 Downing Street invited him to a Lunar New Year reception. This inconsistency and limbo is unacceptable."
Get it together, @ukhomeoffice. Give Finn the citizenship he fully deserves.

Members of Tibetan Youth Congress have been detained outside the Chinese embassy in New Delhi for protesting on the 67th #TibetanUprisingDay. Interviews w/ two of those detained from inside the police van here: https://t.co/AwQZrVoNrF
Thank you to @SenRickScott for co-sponsoring S.3655, the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Offices (#HKETO) Certification Act. The bill helps ensure these offices do not continue to enjoy certain privileges if #HongKong no longer maintains a high degree of autonomy. Thank you!
The sentencing of Jimmy Lai is a grave injustice. The Chinese Communist Party’s weaponization of Hong Kong’s National Security Law targets dissent and silences independent media.
Taiwan urges Jimmy Lai’s immediate freedom and stands shoulder to shoulder with the United States in defending press freedom and democratic principles. 🇹🇼🇺🇸
Beijing sentenced Jimmy Lai to 20 years in prison for defending democracy and press freedom. Locking up a 78-year-old publisher for speaking out shows how the Chinese Communist Party governs Hong Kong. The United States must continue to press for his release. https://t.co/eWvYehPhcB
The sentencing is the toughest among national security cases, even more than “subversion” for democrats primary case. Very lengthy sentence for those who pleaded guilty. Lai, who’s 78, gets the equivalent of a life sentence as he has to spend at least 15 years more without bail

Shibani, for WaPo, did some of the best and most important work covering Hong Kong's democracy protests and subsequent crackdown on dissent. It's disheartening to see yet more cuts to deep international investigative journalism, a trend that only benefits the corrupt & powerful.
Shibani wrote a heap of damn good stories, people know that. What they didn’t see was her working the phones to get a colleague out of a Cambodian jail, helping a journo hunted by the junta escape Myanmar and answering every email from Singaporean kids asking how to be reporters.
“Please get the truth out about our son.”
Alex Pretti, a VA ICU nurse, was killed by ICE while trying to protect a woman being assaulted.
Trump calls him a “monster” and “domestic terrorist.”
Trust your own eyes. Unlike Trump, the video doesn’t lie.
Britian must not let China build a super embassy spy hub in the heart of our financial capital.
The location is right by our vital national infrastructure which carries millions of British people's emails and financial data, which would enable the Chinese Communist Party to launch economic warfare against our nation.
Our international partners have raised concerns about it because this embassy is a clear and present threat to Britian’s national security.
The Labour government must reject it now.
