“I spent almost ₦2 million renting and furnishing a shop… but my biggest customer has never stepped into it.”

That’s what someone told me recently, and honestly, I just kept quiet for a few seconds. 🤦🏽‍♀️

She said everyone told her, “If you don’t have a physical shop, people won’t take you seriously.”

So she borrowed money, paid rent, painted the shop, bought shelves, printed banners… the whole package. 🥲

Then reality hit.

Some days, she’d sit in that shop from morning till evening without a single customer walking in.

But once she posted on WhatsApp, Instagram and TikTok…

Orders started coming in.

Imagine paying for a shop only for your phone to be doing the real work. 😭

That conversation changed the way I think about business.

See ehn… not every business needs a shop first.

If people can order your product online, pay online and get it delivered, why rush to carry the burden of rent?

Shop rent.

Light bill.

Security.

Staff salary.

Multiple taxes.

Before you’ve even sold one item, your expenses are already shouting. 💀

Online gives you something many people underrate…

Room to test.

You can find out if people actually want what you’re selling before tying yourself down with monthly bills.

Does that mean shops are useless?

Not at all.

Restaurants, salons, supermarkets, pharmacies, bakeries… some businesses need a physical location because customers expect to find you there.

But if you’re selling clothes, skincare, gadgets, perfumes, accessories or even digital services…

Abeg, don’t let society pressure you into renting a shop just because it “looks successful.” 😅

Sometimes the person selling from their bedroom is making more money than the person paying ₦5 million yearly for rent.

Business no be competition.

Na profit matter.

Start with the strategy your pocket can carry. Grow your sales. Then let your business pay for the shop not your emotions. ❤️

♈♈Most Nigerians don't have an income problem.

They have an attention problem.

You can't build wealth if every new business trend distracts you.

One week it's perfume. Next week it's mini importation. Then it's crypto. Then it's AI.

Focus long enough for one thing to start paying you.

Hot take:

Some businesses don't fail because the economy is bad.

They fail because the owner spends more time designing flyers than talking to customers.

Marketing isn't posting.

Marketing is getting people to pay you.
