@Detective_Byers As if that were a question she had to ask. Then again, he wasn't one to freely exude emotions from his pores let alone his heart.
But maybe it was time. Joyce's big eyes, curious and soft, were enough for him to break his own mold.
For her.
"Yeah. I've got em somewhere."
@AStubbornMother "You can't leave then, either. Fair is fair." The smile that lit his bearded face was barely enough to light his eyes. He's trying.
He knew Joyce needed to keep Will safe.
@AStubbornMother And he wasn't one to give them. Excuses were useless endeavors that hurt people more than they helped them.
"I know. You're scary. I remember the letters you wrote." Granted, they were always months late, but the pain was never less noticeable in her every written word.
-
@AStubbornMother Sure. Most men did at the time, but they were also all scared to death.
A deep breath, he leaned his head against hers, bending to do so. He thought them more than just close friends these days.
"I'm not going anywhere."
@AStubbornMother There it was. A pang of guilt riddled his thoughts and clenched his heart hard in his chest. Ouch.
Pain filled his eyes, brows furrowing as he squeezed her hand with a turn of his wrist.
"Joyce... I was drafted." Had he a sense of honor in going?
-
@AStubbornMother Rolling his eyes, Hopper nudged her once and squeezed her shoulder, pulling her closer in the means of it.
"Someone has to outdo you." He'd never once stopped caring about Joyce, no matter what happened in their lives-- together or separately.
-
@AStubbornMother If it worked he'd do it. She and Jane brought the best out of him.
"Well, if you're having a bad time and El is having a bad time, there is nothing left to do but burn it all down."
He smirked at her and rubbed her shoulder.
@AStubbornMother "The 0nly reason." Okay, fine. He liked Mike, but he only trusted teenage boys as much as he would have trusted himself at that age.
He feigned a hurt at the ribbing. "Ow."
Still.
"Maybe we should just burn the town down. Do everyone a favor."
@AStubbornMother "Do you think this is any place for Jane to grow up?" Jim dropped his arm, shoulders slumping a bit with the weight of what she's said.
"Yeah, sure, Mike will be hundreds of miles away. So horrible for her," he rolled his eyes, sarcastic.
@AStubbornMother An arm around Joyce's shoulders, comforting her, rubbing her arm in little circles.
"And when we leave, then what? Leave Hawkins to the devils?" Running felt just like that-- running.
Because hell if he was letting her go alone.
@AStubbornMother How could he blame her? Hawkins was the last place any kid wanted to be right now. If not for his job and duty to protect, he'd have taken Jane far from here too.
But her friends...
"You really want to do that?"
Maybe if she left, others would follow. Maybe he could.
@AStubbornMother Hopper had seen her rattled a thousand times before, and knew the signs well. He let her go about her business for a bit and then gently tried to take the pricing gun from her, to still her hands with his own.
"All the time. Hawkins may as well be Hell's asshole."
@AStubbornMother "Okaaay..." Hopper stated at the receiver for a long moment and then laid it back in the cradle.
Checking himself in the mirror, he sighed, sucking in his gut and smoothing a hand the front.
Okay. Good enough. Try going, Hopper.
He arrived ten minutes later at Joyce's.
