Marvel Super Heroes Proves Universes Beyond Still Has Room to Grow
When Wizards of the Coast first announced a Marvel crossover for Magic: The Gathering, the reaction from the community was... complicated. After the lukewarm reception to Spider-Man earlier this year, a lot of us went into Marvel Super Heroes bracing for another underwhelming Universes Beyond entry. Instead, what we got might be the strongest crossover set since Lord of the Rings.
The numbers back this up. Wizards renegotiated its licensing deal to bring Marvel cards onto MTG Arena — something Spider-Man never got — and the response has been immediate. Two Contender Draft events sold out fast enough that Wizards added a second Arena Direct Sealed event running through the back half of July. That's not the profile of a set limping along; that's a set generating enough demand that Wizards is actively expanding support for it mid-cycle.
Part of what's working here is scope. Rather than narrowing in on one corner of the Marvel universe, this set goes wide — Avengers, Fantastic Four, Daredevil, and yes, Squirrel Girl for anyone who's been quietly hoping for a squirrel tribal deck. Four Commander decks, each available in a Surge Foil Collector version, gave the format crowd a reason to buy in alongside the Standard players.
The bigger story, though, is what this means for the rest of 2026. Marvel's success is arriving right as spoiler season opens for The Hobbit and just weeks before we start getting real details on Star Trek. If Wizards can replicate this formula — deep IP investment, Arena integration from day one, and drafting formats worth showing up for — the back half of this year could be the strongest stretch of Universes Beyond content we've seen yet.
Not every crossover is going to land. But Marvel Super Heroes is a pretty clear signal that when Wizards puts in the effort, players will meet them there.
