As I process the recent news shared by Cleveland State, I find myself reflecting on what wrestling and college athletics have meant to me. Wrestling has shaped me into the man I am today, instilling traits such as humility, integrity, resilience, and perseverance. There is no substitute for the experience of chasing your dreams on the mat. Wrestling is a sport with a devoted, almost cult-like following, where glory is found not in widespread fame but in the recognition of dedicated fans—those who have lived it themselves or are connected to someone who has. It’s a sport that demands so much from its competitors, offering lessons that extend far beyond the mat. Unfortunately, the recent decision by the Cleveland State Board of Trustees demonstrates a misunderstanding of this value.

Despite claiming to be stewards of a “transformational student-athlete experience,” Cleveland State has decided to cut a program that has consistently embodied academic and athletic excellence. Over the past four years, the wrestling program has achieved four consecutive top-three finishes in team GPA rankings (3rd, 3rd, 2nd, 2nd) and produced an impressive 20 Scholar All-Americans. The dedication and commitment shown by the student-athletes, both on the mat and in the classroom, have been unparalleled. This decision disregards their hard work and the legacy they have built.

My heart goes out to the underclassmen who chose to undertake the rigorous trials of college wrestling, only to have the rug pulled out from under them. Now, they face the uncertainty of the transfer portal as they search for opportunities to continue their education and athletic careers elsewhere. This decision is part of a troubling trend, following the cancellation of programs at Fresno State and Old Dominion, as well as the attempted cancellation of Stanford Wrestling.

How can a sport so pure in its essence—one that teaches discipline, perseverance, and the value of hard work—be eroded by the misguided decisions of university administrations? Wrestling deserves better, and so do the athletes and coaches who pour their hearts into it.

This is narcissism at its best. Gavin Newsom is a politician with ambitions to be a tyrant. California leads the country in total mass shootings since 1982 with 25, despite having the strictest gun control in America; the next closes state is Texas with 12.

Let's go point by point through this ridiculous 28th Amendment.

Raising the age limit to 21: The average age of a violent criminal is 25-29 with a rate of 17.1% according to the FBI. Now compare that to ages 18-20 at a rate of 10.2%, this suggests that an age limit on people under the age of 21 is nonsensical at best. It's not the age of the person that makes them a criminal, it's a number of different mitigating circumstances that sends people on a path to commit violent crime. California has the highest number of homeless, the highest number of gangs, and the highest number of unemployed; All contribute to violent crime which includes gun violence.

Universal background checks: Background checks in general don't stop anyone from committing violent shootings. Most mass shooters have gotten their guns through the proper legal channels and criminals usually steal guns from people who fail to properly secure their firearms; there is no tangible data to suggest that mass shooters or the average criminal obtain their firearms through a legal private sale. Universal background checks are nothing more than a stepping stone to push for a national registry; there is no way to track secondhand ownership without it. What is crazy is that someone in government is usually the one who fails to stop mass shooters and criminals from obtaining guns or stopping repeat offenders of violent crime from being back on the street. But Gavin tyrant Newsom wants the public to entrust the government with the safety of society. I'll choose my gun over campaign slogans and political talking points any day.

A reasonable waiting period for gun
purchases: Another nonsensical, unnecessary, and stupid proposal. Every single mass shooter has planned their crimes beyond the longest waiting period we have in this country and beyond any waiting period gun control advocates have suggested. There is no reason to believe that a waiting period would have an effect on mass shootings or daily shootings. Criminals don't go through waiting periods just so they can commit the crime they have been waiting to do because they had to wait the required 30 days to pick up their illegally obtained firearm.

Banning the civilian purchase of assault weapons: I'll keep this short. Even with all the mass shootings that are committed in this country, all rifles, including your average hunting bolt and lever action rifles, account for less than 400 murders per year. 1 in 20, roughly 16 million people own AR-15s alone. gun control politicians like Newsom love to point out that these guns are weapons of war and that they don't belong on city streets, yet they exclude police who patrol our city streets, from a ban on weapons of war. Are we your enemy; notice how he said a ban on civilian ownership of “Assault weapons, Federal, State, and local governments will still be permitted to own and use them within American borders.
