Passionate about providing evidence-based information and resources about childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) for families and speech-language pathologists!
Hello Twitter! We're excited to share evidence-based information and resources, including CE courses, about childhood apraxia of speech #CAS for #SLPs and families! https://t.co/uqUPzJj5uk
Even just a few minutes a day, at the right time, can make a difference.

Summer can feel like a mix of opportunity and pressure for parents. You want to help your child keep making progress, but you don’t want speech practice to take over your day. Here’s the good news: You don’t need long practice sessions or complicated routines.
Prosody (rate, pitch, stress, and intonation) is often an overlooked piece of treatment, but it plays a HUGE role in intelligibility and natural-sounding speech. Here are some evidence-based ways to support prosody, especially within motor-based approaches like DTTC.
When we reduce speech demands, we can get a clearer picture of what a child really knows.
We’ve broken down this published article to help clinicians easily navigate the evidence.

Children with CAS don’t just face speech challenges, literacy can be impacted, too.
This 2024 review highlights why early monitoring, thoughtful assessment, & adapted intervention strategies are so important.
Engagement isn’t just a “behavior issue” in CAS therapy, it’s part of the treatment.
Motor-based approaches rely on attention, participation, and repetition. But some children, especially younger ones who haven’t started school, aren’t used to those expectations yet.
If we jump straight into high-repetition practice without building those foundational skills, progress can stall.
For these kids, therapy may initially look like: building attention, increasing tolerance, and shaping participation.

The SLPs who joined us at our FREE CAS Advanced Workshop at Northwestern University inspire us with their creativity, determination, & eagerness to learn! Your enthusiasm for your vocation, depth of knowledge, & desire to provide the best treatment for your clients is energizing.
Conditioning to task helps establish the ability to watch, imitate, repeat, & stay engaged, which allows clinicians to deliver the intensity needed for effective treatment. Do you intentionally spend time conditioning children to the task? Tell us how you do it!
Children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech often require high numbers of practice trials for motor learning. But before implementing approaches like DTTC, some children first need support learning the behavioral expectations of structured practice.
Honoring tactile defensiveness doesn’t mean abandoning DTTC. It means using its dynamic framework to adjust cueing, build regulation first, and fade touch when possible while still targeting accurate, volitional speech.
Save this post for your CAS sessions, share with an SLP colleague, and follow for practical, evidence-based CAS strategies.
What are some other scripts you use with your clients to help build intentional movement?

Part 2: Using age-appropriate language to help children attend to movement (not just sounds) increases awareness, accuracy, and learning. These scripts support the core principles of DTTC and motor learning: slow rate, conscious practice, and movement accuracy.
