Pharm Techs fought back, arguing it hurts local livelihoods and rural healthcare access.

The first major explosion happened over premises ownership during a regulatory shift between 2019 and 2021. Pharmacists argued that only degree holders should have the legal right to superintend and own wholesale or retail pharmacies.

Because of their sheer numbers ,Pharm Techs became the backbone of rural healthcare and community pharmacies. If you walked into a local pharmacy anywhere outside of major urban areas chances are an enrolled Pharm Tech was running the premise .

For decades, the profession has been split into two distinct tiers: Pharmacists (who hold a 5-year university degree) and Pharm Techs (who hold a 3-year diploma). Both are legally recognized, but how they are treated is a different story.

The foundational issue lies within Cap 244 . Originally designed around university-trained pharmacists, the law left Pharm Techs feeling like "second-class citizens" or "glorified assistants," despite Pharm Techs making up the vast majority of the pharmaceutical workforce .

Patient safety comes first. Professional roles must be clearly defined, responsibilities must be respected, and accountability must be enforced. There is no room for ambiguity when patient lives are at stake.

So let's stop asking:
“WHO IS WINNING THE SCOPE WAR?”
Ask:
“IS THE PATIENT GETTING GOOD PHARMACY PRACTICE?”

That's the benchmark.

Because the real enemy isn't the pharmacist.
And it isn't the pharm tech.
It's a system where professional standards can exist on paper while poor practice survives on the ground.
GPP should make that harder.

Much harder.

Here's where I want pharmacists AND pharm techs to be uncomfortable:

If GPP standards expose weaknesses in how a facility operates…

DON'T BLAME THE OTHER CADRE.

Fix the system.

Improve training.

Improve supervision.

Improve documentation.

Improve competency.
