Over the past month, acting in a responsible and constructive manner, we’ve worked with Security Council members and the broader UN membership to focus on key issues, pursue practical actions, and actively fulfill the responsibilities entrusted to us under the UN Charter.
Foreign Minister Wang Yi chaired the high-level open debate at the UN headquarters in New York, during which he made five propositions on defending, revitalizing and strengthening the UN, voicing a strong call for reinvigorating the authority of the UN Charter and the role of the UN. Foreign Minister Wang Yi also attended the meeting of the Group of Friends of Global Governance, during which he proposed nine major directions for reforming global governance. Under China’s presidency, the Security Council also held deliberations on hotspot issues related to Palestine and Israel, Iran and Ukraine, as well as thematic issues including the protection of civilians in armed conflicts. It worked to respond to the concerns of the international community, play its due role, and has successfully completed all agenda items.
As a Permanent Member of the UN Security Council, China stands ready to work with all parties, including the Security Council members, to strengthen solidarity and coordination in the UN, practice true multilateralism, uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and continue fulfilling our duties for world peace and development.
At the Shangri-La Dialogue on Saturday, former Chinese Ambassador to the US Cui Tiankai said the Taiwan question is China's domestic affair and reaffirmed that China's reunification will be achieved. He also rejected claims blaming China for regional instability, arguing instead that China has been "a force for stability and prosperity" in the region and globally.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Tuesday outlined China's position regarding the qualifications required for the next UN secretary-general.
The next secretary-general will have a bearing on the future of UN reform and the practical interests of UN member states, Wang told reporters after he presided over a high-level meeting of the Security Council on upholding the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and strengthening the UN-centered international system.
"China believes that the next secretary-general should at least meet the following qualifications. First, to be firmly committed to upholding the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. Second, to have rich diplomatic and political experience and strong coordination capability. Third, to be able to uphold justice on major issues, in particular, to pay attention to the interests and aspirations of developing countries. Fourth, to be able to keep the UN reform on the right track to increase efficiency and effectiveness," said Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.
