Some of the richest and most successful people in entertainment and business have decided they will NOT simply hand the bulk of their fortunes to their children.

✹ Simon Cowell doesn’t believe in passing enormous wealth from one generation to the next.

✹ Gordon Ramsay has flat-out said his fortune is “definitely not going to them” because he doesn’t want to spoil his kids.

✹ Andrew Lloyd Webber has spoken about inherited wealth damaging work ethic and would rather see much of his money support the arts.

✹ Elton John wants his sons financially secure but without the massive “silver spoon” that can come with inheriting hundreds of millions.

✹ George Lucas has committed the majority of his fortune to philanthropy with education being a major focus.

✹ Michael Bloomberg has pledged the vast majority of his wealth to philanthropy rather than creating another generation of enormous inherited wealth.

Different people. Different fortunes. And slightly different reasons.

Some don’t want to spoil their kids.

Some want them to develop a work ethic and build something themselves.

Others believe their billions can accomplish more by funding education, the arts, charities and causes they care about.

But there’s a common thread here:

▸ Give your children opportunity.
▸ Give them a great education.
▸ Help them get started.

But don’t give them so much that you accidentally take away their hunger, ambition and sense of purpose.

I find this fascinating because these people spent their entire lives building enormous fortunes yet some believe simply handing all of it to their children could do them more harm than good.

Very curious how everyone feels from the ‘giving and receiving’ side of this one.

If you had $500 million sitting in the bank, would you leave it all to your kids?

… or give them enough to get started and make them earn the rest?
