It's a terrible loss! Legendary playwright Ratan Thiyam has passed away today in Imphal. An alumnus of the National School of Drama who later on became its Director and Chairman, and also former Vice Chairman of the Sangeet Natak Academy, he's an embodiment of our culture and struggle. It's a great personal loss for me as well.... Besides the images, thoughts and emotions that his plays embody, I will never forget the pain he has shared with me as he confronts the present condition of his beloved Manipur! The agony that he felt could only come from a patriot! We'll miss you Oja!

No debate on any national TV on the death of 10-month-old boy named Laishram Lamnganba who had both eyeballs missing from the sockets and his body in a state of thawing with a chopping wound and dislocation of the head by terrorists in Manipur. But we have time to discuss only political bickering over mundane issues.

Telem Thoibi Devi, 31 -- among the six members of a Meitei family kidnapped and killed in Manipur's Jiribam by suspects who the state government called "Kuki militants" -- is survived by two sons and husband. The two boys spoke to reporters for the first time on what happened on November 11, the day of the attack on Jiribam. They said the attackers came in two autorickshaws and started burning houses. The two boys said they hid in a field, laying flat, occasionally looking up briefly, but were scared of stray bullets. The two were in another house a few metres away from where the others were staying when it began. They managed to run. Their mother, eldest sister (8 years old) and the four others including the infant were taken away at gunpoint, they said.

A 56 year old man vanished from a military garrison, the campus of 57 Mountain Division of the Indian Army in Manipur on 25 November, 2024. The missing man, a Meitei, who is a supervisor for a contractor working with Military Engineering Services at Leimakhong military detachment, is yet to be traced.

Incidentally, he went missing reportedly near an unofficial road, connecting the two "Kuki" dominated districts of Churachandpur and Kangpokpi, that passes through the military garrison. Concerns have been raised as to how this road comes into existence.

That a person went missing from the military garrison does not augur well for the army and civil-military relation in this troubled state. Unfortunately, the armed forces, just as police, have already come under allegations of being partisan in this violent crisis in Manipur.

I urge our Hon'ble Defence Minister Shri @rajnathsingh ji to look into this issue and do the needful.
