Jimmy Harrel having the power to put our athletic director’s job in jeopardy is ridiculous.
This has nothing to do with job performance. If it did, firing Chad Weiberg wouldn’t even be a topic of conversation. This is a personal vendetta stemming from Weiberg refusing to fire Gundy after the 2024 season.
Let’s go back to 2024.
We were returning basically our entire roster from a team that had just played for a Big 12 championship. Gundy had been to the Big 12 Championship game in 2 of the previous 3 seasons (2021 & 2023) and was the reigning Big 12 Coach of the Year.
You don’t fire a 20+ year, future Hall of Fame head coach after one bad season. Gundy had earned the right to try to fix it the following year.
Obviously, we all know how that went, and Gundy was eventually let go, rightfully so.
But it’s no secret Harrel despises Gundy and everyone who supported him, Shrum and Weiberg included.
Well, Gundy is gone. Shrum is gone. And now Weiberg’s is in the crosshairs because he didn’t fire Gundy when Harrel wanted him to.
That’s loser behavior.
Our football program and athletic department finally have some momentum after 2+ years of feeling completely dead.
If we lose Weiberg, you can kiss Eric Morris goodbye. He won’t stick around for this shit show, who would?
Don’t blow up the momentum we finally have because of a grudge.
I was eating dinner with four Americans when three of their phones went off at once.
It was not a message. It was a tone. A flat, ugly tone that no one would ever choose.
Three men stood up. Not one of them finished a sentence. One of them set down his fork with food still on it.
The woman across from me did not look up. She said, "Barn fire, probably."
I asked who they worked for.
She said, "Nobody. They're volunteers."
Eighty two out of every hundred fire departments in this country are volunteer. I checked that number three times because I did not believe it. There is no salary. There is a tone, and a truck, and a man who was in the middle of his dinner.
I sat with her for one hour and forty minutes. She ate. She asked me about Japan. She was not worried in any way I could see, and I understood slowly that the not being worried was a thing she had built, on purpose, over years, and that it weighed more than worry.
They came back smelling like a house.
Their food was still on the table where they had left it. Nobody cleared it. Nobody covered it. It sat there the whole time, exactly where it was, the way a chair is left out for someone.
They sat back down and ate it cold and did not say where they had been.
I asked the youngest one what he does for work.
He said, "I sell insurance."
He said it in the same voice he had used to put down the fork.
In my country we built an entire warrior class. We gave them swords, land, poems, and eight hundred years of philosophy, so that they would run toward the thing everyone else runs from.
America just lets a man sell insurance until the tone goes off.
@Tyler_PA_ NIL brings a new landscape with less reliance on recruiting, and more reliance on signing proven players, especially when immediate wins are expected.
"Well that’s not something you see every day."
This just fell out of the sky covered in NASA and UMass Lowell stickers.
Does this look like ‘space research’ to you?
