Researchers at Fred Hutchinson examined the brains of 59 women after death. In 63 percent of them they found male DNA, almost certainly left behind by a son. The oldest of those women was 94, and the cells were still sitting there.
Around week four or five of pregnancy, before most women have told anyone, a handful of the baby's cells cross into the mother's bloodstream. Some of them never leave. Scientists call it microchimerism, meaning you are carrying a few of another person's cells inside you. Doctors at Leiden University in the Netherlands checked organs from women who had recently been pregnant and found the baby's cells in every single one. Liver, lungs, thyroid, kidneys, bone marrow, skin, heart.
They do not sit idle. When researchers in Ireland biopsied cesarean scars from 70 women, they found the baby's cells living in the skin as ordinary skin cells, making collagen and repair proteins right at the cut. The child helped close the wound its own birth made.
At Mount Sinai, scientists tagged fetal cells with a glowing marker in pregnant mice, then damaged the mothers' hearts. The fetal cells went to the injury. They became heart muscle and the lining of blood vessels. Nobody has proven the human version yet, but doctors have noticed for years that women who develop heart failure around childbirth recover better than almost any other kind of heart failure patient.
In a study of 177 women, fetal cells appeared in the blood of 85 percent of the healthy participants and only 64 percent of the women who had a very early, non-invasive breast cancer. Nobody has worked out yet whether the cells are doing the protecting. The same cells also turn up in Hashimoto's, an immune condition that attacks the thyroid, so this is a gift with complications.
A French team looked at umbilical cord blood in 2021 and found cells belonging to the baby's grandmother in 5 of 28 samples. Cells that crossed one placenta decades earlier had crossed a second one. Three generations of women, alive in a single bloodstream.
Which means the pull a mother feels toward her child has a physical form. It sits in her liver, her heart, and often her brain, and it stays there for the rest of her life.

This ongoing compromise influences a plant's growth rate, water requirements, and overall resilience, especially in challenging environments.
Historically, scientists faced significant limitations in studying this dynamic process directly. They could either observe stomatal movements under a microscope (often in artificial or uncontrolled settings) or measure overall leaf gas exchange (which reflects aggregate behavior but obscures microscopic details). A recent breakthrough from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign overcomes this divide with an innovative system called Stomata In-Sight.
This integrated tool combines three key technologies in real time:
- A live confocal microscope (specifically laser scanning) that captures high-resolution, three-dimensional images and videos of living stomatal cells and pores without damaging the tissue.
- Precise gas exchange sensors that quantify CO₂ uptake and water loss (stomatal conductance, photosynthesis, and transpiration) from the same leaf section.
- A controlled environmental chamber that maintains specific levels of light, humidity, temperature, and CO₂ to simulate real-world conditions.
By linking microscopic stomatal aperture changes (tracked via machine-learning image analysis for dozens of pores simultaneously) with whole-leaf physiological responses, researchers can now observe how individual stomata behave and contribute to the plant's overall performance under varying scenarios.
The implications are profound, particularly for agriculture. Water scarcity remains the primary constraint on crop yields worldwide. By identifying the genes and mechanisms that govern stomatal efficiency—such as opening/closing speed, density, or aperture size—scientists can develop breeding strategies for crops that conserve water more effectively while maintaining or boosting photosynthesis. This could lead to varieties better equipped to withstand drought, heat, and other effects of climate change, ultimately supporting higher food production with fewer resources.
Stomata In-Sight represents a major advance in plant science, transforming our ability to study—and ultimately engineer—plants that not only endure environmental stress but actively help humanity adapt to a changing climate.

For centuries, every anatomy textbook swore there were only three pairs of major salivary glands. Turns out the books were wrong, and the missing ones were hiding in plain sight.
In 2020, Dutch researchers scanning head-and-neck cancer patients with a cutting-edge PET/CT technique (PSMA PET-CT) noticed an unexpected glow deep in the nasopharynx, right where the nasal cavity drains into the throat. No textbook had ever marked a salivary gland there.
They double-checked: 100 consecutive patients → same structure in every single one. Then they dissected two fresh cadavers and there they were: a previously unknown pair of macroscopic salivary glands, roughly 3.9 cm long, draped over the tubarium (the cartilage of the Eustachian tube). The team named them the tubarial glands.
Their job? Keep the upper throat and the back of the nose moist during talking, swallowing, and breathing, an area that gets painfully dry after radiation.
Here’s why this matters: radiation oncologists had never been told to spare this spot. The researchers re-analyzed treatment plans from 723 patients and found the more radiation the tubarial region received, the worse the toxicity, more trouble swallowing, thicker saliva, constant dry mouth.
